Mitch Marner<\/a>\u2019s playoff breakout with the Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> has forced a hard conversation in Toronto. Through 13 playoff games, Marner leads the NHL<\/a> with 19 points, owns a plus-13 rating, and has become the engine behind Vegas\u2019 run to the Western Conference Final against the Colorado Avalanche. <\/p>\n

The same player, once branded as a postseason disappointment with the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>, now looks like a Conn Smythe favorite.<\/p>\n

The numbers alone are difficult for Toronto to ignore. Marner already has seven playoff goals, more than double his best postseason total with the Leafs. He has delivered game-breaking moments, including a second-round hat trick against Anaheim and a between-the-legs breakaway finish in Game 6. Vegas has also leaned on him in every situation, where he leads the playoffs with four shorthanded points.<\/p>\n

But the biggest difference is not only statistical. It is structural.<\/p>\n

Mitch Marner was always playing \u2018in service of Matthews\u2019<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s Greg Wyshynski recently pointed out the frustration many observers share. \u201cHe\u2019s different, and it can\u2019t just be the Toronto media, and it just can\u2019t be the fans,\u201d Wyshynski said while discussing Marner\u2019s postseason transformation.<\/p>\n

That answer may sit inside the way Vegas distributes responsibility. Veteran analyst Jeff Marek referenced skills coach Adam Oates when explaining why Marner looks freer in Vegas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not my theory. It\u2019s Adam Oates\u2019 theory, and I believe it,\u201d Marek said. \u201cIn Toronto, he was expected to do everything for everybody. Go fetch this puck. Go make this entry. Go do this. Everything was like, \u2018Mitch is gonna do this to set up Matthews, who is gonna score.\u2019 Right? <\/p>\n

\u201cEverything was always gonna be in service of Matthews, and Mitch had to go play fetch for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

That workload mattered. In Toronto, Marner often carried the puck through the neutral zone, managed retrievals, drove transition play, and created offense for Auston Matthews<\/a>. When playoff checking tightened, the pressure multiplied. Every failed possession became magnified in the Toronto market.<\/p>\n

Vegas built a system that supports Marner<\/p>\n

Vegas spreads those demands across elite two-way players like William Karlsson, Mark Stone, and Jack Eichel. Marner no longer has to initiate every sequence.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Now] he looks great with William Karlsson, and William Karlsson is one of the best two-way centers in the entire NHL. We know that,\u201d Marek said. \u201cPeople are doing things for Mitch. It\u2019s not just Mitch doing things for everybody else, specifically, you know, just go find the puck, get the puck, hand the puck, get the puck, and get it to Matthews, and he is going to shoot. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn Vegas, it\u2019s different man. He\u2019s not expected to do all of that. We\u2019ve got a William Karlsson, we\u2019ve got a Mark Stone, we\u2019ve got a Jack Eichel. You don\u2019t have to do all that stuff that you did in Toronto that wore you out, mentally and physically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s roster imbalance came to the surface<\/p>\n

The 2025-26 regular season has exposed a long-standing issue with Toronto\u2019s core construction. The Leafs relied too heavily on individual creation from a small group of stars without enough insulation underneath them. And when they failed to create the desired offense, the Leafs missed the playoffs with a 32-36-14 record.<\/p>\n

Vegas, by contrast, attacks in layers and has depth. Marner can create offense without carrying the full emotional and tactical burden of the team.<\/p>\n

That does not erase Toronto\u2019s criticism entirely. Marner\u2019s playoff record with the Leafs included long scoring droughts in elimination games, and the scrutiny around his contract never disappeared after his 2019 extension. But his current run suggests the environment in Toronto amplified every weakness while limiting the parts of his game that thrive under support and structure.<\/p>\n

Vegas did not change who Marner is as a player.
