{"id":6107,"date":"2026-04-15T12:08:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/6107\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T12:08:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:08:26","slug":"b-c-tables-implementation-legislation-after-30-year-negotiation-with-first-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/6107\/","title":{"rendered":"B.C. tables implementation legislation after 30-year negotiation with First Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The B.C. government tabled implementation legislation on Tuesday in another step toward a fully ratified treaty for the K\u2019\u00f3moks First Nation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The province introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/k&#039;\u00f3moks-treaty-act\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K\u2019\u00f3moks Treaty Act<\/a>, 2026, after negotiations began in 1994 with the federal government and the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether with K\u2019\u00f3moks, this treaty will create opportunity, jobs, prosperity and certainty for our beautiful province,\u201d said Premier David Eby in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic day for the K\u2019\u00f3moks people, for those who have worked long and hard to reach this moment. People are experiencing real benefits from treaties, based in mutual trust and shared goals, like healthy communities, new investments and prosperity, services that make life easier, and sustainable land, water and resource stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The K\u2019\u00f3moks Treaty Act establishes the legal status of the K\u2019\u00f3moks Treaty, in which the First Nation will receive ownership of about 3,442 hectares of land scattered around Vancouver Island, with an additional 1,592 hectares available for purchase from the province over time.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>K\u2019\u00f3moks territory spans north to Quadra Island up to the southern reaches of the Johnstone Strait, with the heart being in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>K\u2019\u00f3moks Reserves, including their administration and territory, primarily surround the city of Courtenay.<\/p>\n<p>K\u2019\u00f3moks has 351 registered members, of whom 102 reside on reserve, according to the province.<\/p>\n<p>All of the land covered in the treaty is already owned by either the First Nation or the B.C. government.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Esquimalt First Nation sues Canadian government'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/E.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:59<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEsquimalt First Nation sues Canadian government\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntroducing this legislation alongside K\u2019\u00f3moks First Nation marks a major milestone in our government-to-government relationship, and in the B.C. treaty negotiations process,\u201d said Spencer Chandra Herbert, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Perspectives<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf fully ratified, the K\u2019\u00f3moks Treaty will bring stability and certainty through positive changes, a path to self-governance, recognition of rights, social and economic opportunities, all leading toward a prosperous and bright future for the K\u2019\u00f3moks people, and for everyone in the surrounding communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Once the legislation is debated and passed in the legislature, more steps must be taken by the B.C. and Canadian governments.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is one of two steps, with the second being the signing of the treaty by the K\u2019\u00f3moks First Nation, and both levels of government.<\/p>\n<p>The federal parliament will then review the treaty and if fully ratified, the K\u2019\u00f3moks Treaty will be one of the first comprehensive treaties to come into effect since the Tla\u2019amin Treaty in 2016, according to the B.C. government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important milestone for K\u2019\u00f3moks First Nation,\u201d said K\u2019\u00f3moks First Nation Elected Chief Councillor Nicole Rempel. \u201cOur members have already shown strong support for this treaty, and we are confident in both the agreement and the process that has brought us here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe introduction of this legislation moves us closer to implementation \u2014 strengthening our governance, recognizing our rights, and creating long-term opportunities for our Nation and the region.
