It said: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”

The Alberta premier has repeatedly said she personally supports the province remaining in Canada and intends to vote that way, but that she does not want to “silence the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans.”

Carney, the leader of the ruling Liberal Party, has described the referendum as undemocratic, telling reporters: “Is it the democratic will of Albertans? Did they vote for this in the last provincial election? No, they didn’t.”

The prime minister also pledged to campaign against separatism. “We have to be very careful about this,” he said. “There’s a very strong positive case for Canada, a strong Alberta in a united Canada. I look forward to making that case with many, many other Albertans and Canadians over the course of the next 150 days.”

Smith’s office responded to Carney in a statement on Monday, saying, “Albertans’ frustrations have been fueled by the last 10 years of disastrous policies from Ottawa under … Justin Trudeau,” who led the Liberal Party and served as Canada’s prime minister prior to Carney.

“I would also remind all Canadians that we should not dismiss the legitimate grievances of Albertans,” Smith added. “Instead, we should focus on addressing these issues, restoring hope in Canada and demonstrating that our country can work and is working.”

Prediction Market Odds

Predictions markets saw an increase in odds following Smith’s referendum announcement. Polymarket’s 17 percent spike on Friday jumped from 9 percent the day before.

“Any referendum that establishes Alberta’s desire for independence, sets a framework for independence, or establishes independence from Canada will qualify,” Polymarket said.

Similarly, Kalshi put the odds of Alberta voting to secede from Canada at about 29 percent on Friday, up from about 22 percent the day before. Kalshi’s surge also came down again by Sunday, to about 25 percent.

Kalshi’s market rules said, “If Alberta votes to secede from Canada before the date of the next Canadian federal general election, then the market resolves to Yes.”

Prediction markets allow traders to buy and sell contracts tied to political outcomes and current events, aggregating real‑money wagers into probability estimates. Prices fluctuate as traders react to polling and broader political trends. They measure trader sentiment at a given moment but do not always accurately predict the future.

<img id="11993412" alt="Separatist supporters gather during a rally in front of the Elections Alberta headquarters in Edmonton, Canada, on May 4 as they submit boxes of signatures in the hope of triggering an independence referendum." caption="Separatist supporters gather during a rally in front of the Elections Alberta headquarters in Edmonton, Canada, on May 4, 2026, as they submit boxes of signatures in the hope of triggering an independence referendum. Alberta separatists submitted stacks of boxes to election officials on Monday, which they said contained the signatures of more than 300,000 supporters, enough names to force an independence referendum in Canada's oil-rich province. A boisterous crowd of several hundred waved the blue provincial flag on a bright, clear day, cheering as separatist leader Mitch Sylvestre delivered the petitions to Elections Alberta. This petition is still undergoing verification, the group said, as it has been held up by legal challenges.

On May 13, Alberta Court of King’s Bench Justice Shaina Leonard ruled that the province failed in its constitutional duty to consult First Nations, whose treaty rights could be affected by separation.

The decision halted the citizen‑led petition process and became the immediate trigger for Smith’s alternative referendum plan.

Alberta and Ottawa’s Proposed Pipeline

Despite their differing opinions on holding the nonbinding referendum, Smith has been working with Carney’s federal government to build an oil pipeline to the Pacific coast, a move likely intended to appease dissatisfied Albertans.

The province, along with several others in the west, has long seen itself as unfairly treated by Ottawa. Its oil and gas resources make it a significant economic contributor, but many feel underrepresented in the capital, especially over the environmental policies that regulate its resource industry.

Cameron Davies, the leader of the Republican Party of Alberta, previously told Newsweek regarding a separatist referendum: “This isn’t about anger, it’s about forging our own path and seeking our own future. Alberta contributes more than we get back, year after year. We’re rich in resources, rich in talent and rich in potential, yet we’re held back by a system that doesn’t serve us.”

On May 15, Carney and Smith announced a climate and energy agreement that paves the way for the new West Coast Oil Pipeline, with construction beginning as early as September 1, 2027, the Alberta premier said. The pipeline would transport an estimated 1 million barrels daily from the Canadian province to Asian markets.

Carney said at a news conference following the agreement: “Today is also about building trust in a Canada that works. A Canada rooted in cooperative federalism where we build together, pragmatically and ambitiously, to achieve our shared ambitions.”

The chances of Alberta voting for independence in 2026 have eased slightly after spiking late last week, following…

[98
164,3289,17,111
post-61694","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mark-carney","tag-alberta","tag-brexit","tag-canada","tag-mark-carney
["GET
