<\/p>\nThe chances of Alberta voting for independence in 2026 have eased slightly after spiking late last week, following the province\u2019s announcement that it will hold a referendum on whether to remain in Canada or begin the legal process toward a binding separation vote in the future.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the prediction platform Polymarket put the odds of the province voting for independence this year at 12.7 percent, down from 17 percent on Friday, when Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said the nonbinding referendum would take place on October 19.<\/p>\n
The decline comes as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a blunt warning, likening the Alberta vote to the United Kingdom\u2019s 2016 Brexit referendum and cautioning that voters often underestimate the long\u2011term consequences of such decisions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw firsthand what happened in the United Kingdom when the view was, \u2018Vote for this, it\u2019ll be soft and then we\u2019ll negotiate,’\u201d said Carney, who was the governor of the Bank of England in 2016 when Britain voted to leave the European Union. \u201cThey\u2019re still 10 years later trying to undo what people didn\u2019t think they were voting for, but what they ended up having.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carney and Smith Clash Over Referendum<\/p>\n
On May 21, Smith, the leader of the United Conservative Party, announced the 10th question to be added to an already scheduled ballot covering immigration and constitutional issues. It said: \u201cShould Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?\u201d<\/p>\n
The Alberta premier has repeatedly said she personally supports the province remaining in Canada and intends to vote that way, but that she does not want to \u201csilence the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney, the leader of the ruling Liberal Party, has described the referendum as undemocratic, telling reporters: \u201cIs it the democratic will of Albertans? Did they vote for this in the last provincial election? No, they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prime minister also pledged to campaign against separatism. \u201cWe have to be very careful about this,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a very strong positive case for Canada, a strong Alberta in a united Canada. I look forward to making that case with many, many other Albertans and Canadians over the course of the next 150 days.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith\u2019s office responded to Carney in a statement on Monday, saying, \u201cAlbertans\u2019 frustrations have been fueled by the last 10 years of disastrous policies from Ottawa under \u2026 Justin Trudeau,\u201d who led the Liberal Party and served as Canada\u2019s prime minister prior to Carney.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would also remind all Canadians that we should not dismiss the legitimate grievances of Albertans,\u201d Smith added. \u201cInstead, we should focus on addressing these issues, restoring hope in Canada and demonstrating that our country can work and is working.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prediction Market Odds<\/p>\n
Predictions markets saw an increase in odds<\/a> following Smith\u2019s referendum announcement. Polymarket\u2019s 17 percent spike on Friday jumped from 9 percent the day before.<\/p>\n \u201cAny referendum that establishes Alberta\u2019s desire for independence, sets a framework for independence, or establishes independence from Canada will qualify,\u201d Polymarket said.<\/p>\n Similarly, Kalshi put the odds of Alberta voting to secede from Canada at about 29 percent on Friday, up from about 22 percent the day before.
