On Wednesday he is holding public conversations on defence, Arctic security and industrial partnerships, including one with Industry Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Stubb said he and Carney share values and interests and that in many ways he considers\u00a0Canada\u00a0an honorary member of the European Union and the Nordic nations.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five things\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0Finland\u00a0have in common:<\/p>\n<p>Both countries are Arctic nations. Nearly one-third of Finland\u2019s land mass is above the Arctic Circle, while nearly 40 per cent of Canada\u2019s land mass is in the three northern territories.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement last year, the countries said they were committed to pursuing a \u201cpeaceful, prosperous and stable\u201d Arctic through ventures like the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort, a pact with the U.S. to produce polar icebreakers.<\/p>\n<p>The statement also said\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0Finland\u00a0are committed to advancing the rights and well-being of Indigenous Peoples and northern communities.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tNATO and military defence\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Finland\u00a0joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) alliance in 2023 in response to rising alarm about the threat posed by Russia following Moscow\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.\u00a0Canada\u00a0was the first country to ratify its request.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>NATO\u2019s annual report, released in March, shows Carney\u2019s government met the alliance\u2019s key defence spending benchmark for 2025 by shelling out just over $63 billion. For the first time since the end of the Cold War,\u00a0Canada\u00a0is spending roughly two per cent of its GDP on national defence.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Canada meets 2% defence target for 1st time amid shifting NATO priorities'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GN1_SITE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:16<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCanada meets 2% defence target for 1st time amid shifting NATO priorities\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The NATO report said\u00a0Finland\u00a0spent 2.87 per cent of its GDP on national defence in 2025, equal to more than US$9 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In last year\u2019s joint statement,\u00a0Finland\u00a0and\u00a0Canada\u00a0said they were committed to ensuring Arctic and Northern perspectives are considered in NATO activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of\u00a0Canada\u00a0website says merchandise trade between\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0Finland\u00a0was valued at $2.4 billion in 2025. It says\u00a0Canada\u00a0exported $621.2 million and imported $1.8 billion in goods.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>It says Canada\u2019s commercial relationship with\u00a0Finland\u00a0revolves around science, technology and innovation partnerships and investments.<\/p>\n<p>The government says Canadian mining companies also have a strong presence in northern\u00a0Finland\u00a0and Canadian firms are among the largest private sector employers in Lapland.<\/p>\n<p>Two-way trade between\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0Finland\u00a0has increased 33.5 per cent since 2017, the website says.<\/p>\n<p>The governments of\u00a0Canada\u00a0and Nordic countries \u2014 Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and\u00a0Finland\u00a0\u2014 agreed last month in Oslo to continue work to defend Arctic sovereignty and to deepen economic ties against other countries\u2019 efforts to use technology and trade as a \u201ccoercive tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>At that meeting, leaders discussed the need to expand trade and investment ties in response to U.S. tariffs and Washington\u2019s threats to annex Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>Hockey is the most popular sport in both\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0Finland\u00a0and the countries often play each other in high-level tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>At the 2026 Winter Olympics,\u00a0Canada\u00a0beat\u00a0Finland\u00a03-2 in the men\u2019s hockey semifinal \u2014 a game Stubb jokingly told Gov. Gen. He said the two countries sometimes project power and nations like\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0Finland\u00a0are stronger when they work together.<\/p>\n<p>Carney has pushed for middle powers to band together to push back against predatory great powers \u2014 a theme that dominated his headline-making speech in Davos, Switzerland in January.<\/p>\n<p>In that speech to the World Economic Forum, Carney urged middle powers to work together against \u201cAmerican hegemony\u201d and the efforts of great powers to coerce and subjugate smaller countries.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t&amp;copy 2026 The Canadian Press\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Finland\u2019s President Alexander Stubb is in Ottawa this week.
