(Photo by Jari Pestelacci/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images)

(Eurasia Sport Images via Getty Images)

The nation’s run at the men’s hockey world championship came to a disappointing end with consecutive defeats in the semifinal and bronze medal game.

Canada looked in terrific form heading in, going undefeated in the group stage and then dispatching the U.S. in the quarterfinals. Led by superstars in Sidney Crosby and Macklin Celebrini, they seemed on course once again when they took a 2-1 lead against Finland after the first period.

It all fell apart in the second period, though, as the Finns outshot Canada 10-3 in the period and converted on three of those opportunities to take a 4-2 lead. There was no response from the red and white thereafter.

“There were a couple of mental absences and mistakes in the second that cost us,” captain Celebrini said after the game. “They stuck to their structure. They did the same thing throughout the game. We knew they’d trap up the middle, and that’s where you can’t turn pucks over. They defended really hard.”

In the bronze medal game, Canada looked a team carrying over the disappointment of a semifinal loss as it fell into an 0-2 hole. It seemed all but finished until Robert Thomas scored twice in the final 90 seconds to force overtime. Celebrini assisted the game-tying goal to finish as the team leader in points with 14 (six goals, eight assists).

Unfortunately, despite Canada taking momentum into the overtime frame, Noah Steen scored the winner for Norway at the 3:32 mark to force Canada to settle for fourth place.

Canada holds the record for most golds at the tournament with 28, but this is now the third straight year it finishes without a medal.

Marsch names 26-man Canada FIFA World Cup squad<img alt="TORONTO, ON - MARCH 31: Jonathan David #7 of Canada runs during an International Friendly against Tunisia at BMO Field on March 31, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, the absence of all-star Jalen Williams due to injury and the complete no-show from Chet Holmgren meant he had very little by way of support.

Holmgren, considered the second-best player in the absence of Williams, finished with just four points and four rebounds and was clearly overwhelmed by both the moment and presence of Victor Wembanyama in being limited to just two field goal attempts.

Montreal native Luguentz Dort also wrapped up a miserable series with just three points on 1-of-4 shooting in a starting role.

Gilgeous-Alexander was honest and reflective about how he viewed a season where he won a second consecutive MVP but fell short of the ultimate team goal.

“I failed at my goal,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I didn’t achieve what I wanted to achieve. I didn’t get where I wanted to go this season. There’s a reason for that. The Tempo stand seventh overall.

Against the Sky in Chicago, Nyara Sabally dominated with 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting. (Photo by Alain JOCARD / AFP via Getty Images)

(ALAIN JOCARD via Getty Images)

It has been a stunning opening week at Roland Garros, to say the least.

The men’s draw was already considered a bit more open with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz missing out due to a wrist injury. Then came the shock of the tournament in the second round, as ATP No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s body fell apart in the boiling heat after leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 against 56th-ranked Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Sinner said he experienced dizziness and cramps, incredibly losing 18 of the final 20 games as Cerundolo emerged victorious 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.

That loss appeared to open the door for the all-time Grand Slam leader 24-time champion Novak Djokovic, but he was then stunned in the third round by 19-year-old rising star Joao Fonseca. Here, Djokovic had won the first two sets and had a 279-1 record at Majors when building that advantage. Yet, somehow, Fonseca found an incredible level of tennis to outplay the 39-year-old, who appeared to run out of gas and advance.

All this now means Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded fourth, is now the second-highest seed remaining in the tournament behind Germany’s Alexander Zverev and has a very winnable path to the final. He has worked his way to the Round of 16 thus far and faces Chilean Alejandro Tabilo next, who was born and raised in Toronto.

Opportunity beckons for the 25-year-old and we now wait to see if Auger-Aliassime can take advantage.

On the women’s side, ninth-seeded Vicky Mboko lost to 19th-seeded Madison Keys who is a former Australian Open winner and reached the French Open semis four years ago. Leylah Fernandez, who came in as the 24th seed, lost her first round match in straight sets to American Alycia Parks.

Hoffman blows it again for Blue Jays<img alt="TORONTO, CANADA - MAY 23: Jeff Hoffman #23 of the Toronto Blue Jays pitches against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the ninth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on May 23, 2026 in Toronto, Canada. (Photo by Tara Walton/Getty Images)

(Tara Walton via Getty Images)

Riding the momentum of four straight wins that took the Blue Jays back to .500, Toronto looked all but set for a fifth straight win carrying a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning in Baltimore.

Jeff Hoffman, who has already been formally removed from the closer role, was needed to finish this off after John Schneider had already turned to Tyler Rogers and Louis Varland for the seventh and eighth.

Hoffman struck out the first batter but then hit Coby Mayo to bring up the bottom of the linup. Hoffman then surrendered a triple, a single, a double and two walks before Schneider took him out with the Blue Jays now clinging to a one-run lead.

The seldom used Connor Seabold then came in and gave up a walk and a single that conceded the tying and winning run. The Orioles carried that momentum into Sunday’s game to go up 6-0 in the third inning before hanging on for a 9-5 win.

In a scary moment, outfielder Jesus Sanchez was struck by a ball thrown at him from the outfield sets and was forced to leave the game. The guilty party was removed from the game and, thankfully, Sanchez’s X-rays on his gloveless right hand came back negative.

Later, Sanchez was actually having a playful moment with a 12-year-old in the crowd and joked about playing catch with him. The throw came in when Sanchez wasn’t paying attention, though. It’s hard not to feel for the kid and how upset he must have felt to be thrown out of the game.

Noteworthy:

This was a good news/bad news kind of week in Canadian sports.
