{"id":70353,"date":"2026-06-01T22:49:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T22:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/70353\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T22:49:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T22:49:13","slug":"carney-promises-to-combat-antisemitism-in-canada-citing-surge-in-hate-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/70353\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney promises to combat antisemitism in Canada, citing surge in hate crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By Ryan Patrick Jones<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">TORONTO, June 1 (Reuters) &#8211; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Monday a new federal advisory council to combat antisemitism, warning \u200cthat a surge in hate crimes means the country is failing to \u200cprotect Jewish Canadians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Speaking at a Toronto synagogue, Carney said antisemitism in Canada &#8220;has surged to levels not \u200bseen in the post-war period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Of 1,342 religion-based hate crimes reported in 2024, roughly 70% targeted the Jewish community, which makes up about 1% of Canada\u2019s population, government data shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney unveiled the Ministerial Advisory Council on Rights, Equality, and Inclusion, tasked with addressing antisemitism \u200cand other forms of hate. \u2060The council will be chaired by Canadian Identity and Culture Minister Marc Miller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The crisis of antisemitism in Canada today is specific, it&#8217;s \u2060severe, and it demands a targeted response,&#8221; Carney said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney said he had directed the council to reassess the nature and drivers of antisemitism in Canada, improve data collection on \u200bhate incidents \u200band measure the effectiveness of investments in \u200beducation, prevention and community safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The surge \u200cin antisemitic hate crimes in Canada has escalated sharply since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and Israel&#8217;s ensuing war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In his speech on Monday, Carney cited bullets fired at Jewish schools, firebombs thrown at synagogues, and attacks targeting Jewish-owned businesses and community centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney said his government has introduced six pieces \u200cof legislation aimed at improving public safety and \u200bcombating hatred. Among them is a bill which \u200bwould strengthen protections for places of \u200bworship, schools and community centres and make hate-motivated crime a specific \u200coffence. The bill passed the House \u200bof Commons in March \u200b2026 and is now before the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The government committed C$75 million ($54.19 million) in April to improve security at religious institutions, including synagogues and Jewish day \u200bschools, Carney said.
