The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) will replace the GST\/HST credit in July 2026. <\/p>\n

As part of the transition, an additional one-time GST\/HST credit top-up payment will be issued starting on\u00a0June 5, 2026\u00a0to recipients who were entitled to the January 2026 GST credit.<\/p>\n

This is money in your pocket, if your income is low enough to be eligible. Funds are delivered by direct-deposit or by mail.<\/p>\n

Payments for\u00a0July 2026\u00a0to\u00a0June 2027\u00a0will be based on the information from your 2025 tax return.<\/p>\n

The one-time June 5 top-up:<\/p>\n

The one-time top-up on June 5 was not assured in the Groceries and Essentials Benefit announcement in January 2026 by Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a>. <\/p>\n

But then it came through (with Senate approval in April). It\u2019s a political recognition of helping low-income Canadians as household affordability has become even worse only a few months from when the first announcement was made in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow inflation is back under control, but there\u2019s still an affordability gap,\u201d said Wayne Long, Secretary of State for Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions on April 17 when announcing the one-time June 5 top-up to the Groceries and Essentials Benefit.<\/p>\n

The top-up was included in the January 26 announcement by the prime minister but at that time still required Royal Assent by the Senate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are offering this one-time payment to help with affordability and relieve some of that pressure for those who need it most,\u201d said Long in a statement on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAffordability\u00a0remains\u00a0a top priority\u00a0for our government.\u00a0We\u00a0want all Canadians, including seniors,\u00a0to get ahead,\u201d said Secretary of State (Seniors), Stephanie McLean.\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, including the one-time payment,\u00a0will do just that by putting\u00a0money back in people\u2019s pocket, helping\u00a0make everyday expenses more manageable.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s in a name:<\/p>\n

Now calling the low-income GST\/HST rebate support the Groceries and Essentials Benefit<\/a> acknowledges food costs but also other household financial challenges. <\/p>\n

A few years ago one or more of the GST rebates was temporarily called a Grocery rebate (something the NDP at the time pushed the Liberal government to do).<\/p>\n

Some other essentials to which households might apply the non-taxable funds might include utility bills, credit card payments, clothing or school items for children, unexpected car or appliance repairs, or many other things where some additional funds would help in a pinch.<\/p>\n

The maximum benefit over the course of the upcoming 12-month period (July 2026 to June 2027)<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what the federal government\u2019s Groceries and Essentials Benefit webpage<\/a> says:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn\u00a0July 2026, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) will replace the GST\/HST credit. Under the new program name, payment amounts will be increased, but the eligibility, payment calculation, and structure will be the same as the GST\/HST credit. Quarterly payment amounts will increase by 25% for 5 years (from 2026 to 2031) starting in\u00a0July 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a part of the transition to the new CGEB, an additional one-time GST\/HST credit top-up payment will be provided to individuals who were entitled to receive the GST\/HST credit in January 2026. This immediate support will be issued starting\u00a0June 5, 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese measures will provide increased financial support to more than 12 million Canadians with low and modest incomes to help manage the costs of everyday essentials.\u201d<\/p>\n
