{"id":72231,"date":"2026-06-03T01:54:04","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T01:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/72231\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T01:54:04","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T01:54:04","slug":"toddler-dies-after-bouncy-castle-carried-away-by-wind-in-montreal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/72231\/","title":{"rendered":"Toddler dies after bouncy castle carried away by wind in Montreal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A three-year-old girl has died of her injuries after she was blown away in a bouncy castle in Montreal&#8217;s LaSalle borough on Sunday afternoon, when the winds were high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A spokesperson for Quebec&#8217;s coroner&#8217;s office confirmed the child had died in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and all those affected,&#8221; wrote spokesperson Jake Lamotta Granato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In total, 11 people \u2014 seven adults and four children \u2014 were injured during the incident, according to an Urgences-sant\u00e9 spokesperson. Of those, six were transported to hospital Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. in Ouellette Park, where the Madre Dei Cristiani Church was holding a community party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gusts of wind of 50 km\/h were reported around that time by Environment Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bouncy castle was reportedly picked up and thrown several metres away by the wind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Condolences, police investigation<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a statement sent out Monday morning, the borough mayor of LaSalle, Nancy Blanchet, said she is looking into the incident and extended support to the affected families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Our entire community is deeply shaken by this serious accident,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Tuesday, both the mayor of Montreal and Quebec Premier Christine Fr\u00e9chette extended their condolences to the toddler&#8217;s family and loved ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;No parent should ever have to endure the loss of a child,&#8221; Fr\u00e9chette wrote in a social media post, expressing her profound sadness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;My thoughts also go out to the LaSalle community, Mayor Nancy Blanchet, the first responders, as well as the entire medical staff who were called upon to intervene.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Coroner Martine Lachance has been appointed to investigate the causes and circumstances surrounding the child&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Following the investigation, the coroner may issue recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths in similar conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Montreal police confirmed on Tuesday they have also launched their own investigation and will review if safety measures were properly followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Injuries linked to inflatable structures<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Health Canada advises operators of inflatable structures to securely anchor them to the ground to prevent them from moving, tipping over or lifting into the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A 2013 study published by the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Public Health Agency of Canada;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/reports-publications\/health-promotion-chronic-disease-prevention-canada-research-policy-practice\/vol-33-no-3-2013\/emergency-department-presentations-injuries-associated-with-inflatable-amusement-structures-canada-1990-2009.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Public Health Agency of Canada<\/a> identified 674 injuries associated with inflatable attractions reported through the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program between 1990 and 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Children between the ages of two and nine accounted for the largest share of injuries, while fractures represented more than one-third of reported cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Another study by researchers at Toronto Metropolitan University found inflatable structures were responsible for 42 per cent of amusement-ride injuries recorded in a U.S. injury surveillance database in 2010 \u2014 a higher proportion than any category of mechanical ride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The study&#8217;s lead author, Kathryn Woodcock, echoed Health Canada&#8217;s recommendations for operators, adding that inflatable structures should not be used when weather conditions, including high winds, exceed manufacturers&#8217;
