{"id":77513,"date":"2026-06-06T16:06:38","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T16:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/77513\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T16:06:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T16:06:38","slug":"canadian-pm-mark-carney-warns-against-alberta-independence-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/77513\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian PM Mark Carney warns against Alberta independence vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took a swing at an upcoming vote on Alberta\u2019s independence, calling it a \u201cdangerous bluff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn these separation issues, it is often advanced that, \u2018Vote for this and it\u2019s a free option,\u2019 \u2018Vote for this and we will strengthen your \u2014 our hand in a future negotiation.\u2019 That is a very dangerous bluff, that is a very dangerous bluff,\u201d Carney told reporters Monday, calling it an \u201cobservation from experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw firsthand what happened in the United Kingdom, when the view was, \u2018Vote for this, it\u2019ll be soft, and then we\u2019ll negotiate, etc.\u2019 And they ended up, and they\u2019re still \u2014 10 years later \u2014 trying to undo what people didn\u2019t think they were voting for,\u201d Carney, who ran the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020, said, likely <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/5185464-canada-mark-carney-wins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">referencing the Brexit vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Alberta is set to have a referendum about no longer being a part of Canada. <\/p>\n<p>But Premier Danielle Smith said last week that the vote will not determine the separation, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/ap\/ap-international\/ap-alberta-province-plans-a-public-vote-on-whether-to-hold-a-binding-referendum-on-leaving-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Associated Press reported<\/a>. Voters are set to determine if it\u2019s the time to have a referendum about leaving the country, according to Smith, the AP reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be clear. I support Alberta remaining in Canada, and this is how I would vote on separation in a provincial referendum. It is also the position of my government,\u201d she said, according to the AP. <\/p>\n<p>A \u201cyes\u201d vote in a binding referendum still would not trigger independence. Negotiations with the federal government would have to take place. A 1998 Supreme Court ruling means provinces cannot secede unilaterally from Canada, AP reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration earlier this year reportedly took meetings with a fringe far-right separatist group from Alberta. British Columbia Premier David Eby harshly critiqued the Alberta Prosperity Project and Trump administration meetings as amounting to \u201ctreason,\u201d in response to reporting by the Financial Times.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
