{"id":78306,"date":"2026-06-07T15:04:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T15:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/78306\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T15:04:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T15:04:11","slug":"canadian-prime-minister-mark-carney-to-visit-ireland-next-week-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/78306\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian prime minister Mark Carney to visit Ireland next week \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Canadian prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> will visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mayo\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mayo\/\">Mayo<\/a> next week, in his first trip to Ireland since taking up his role in March 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It will be the first bilateral visit to Ireland by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/canada\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/canada\/\">Canadian<\/a> prime minister in almost ten years, and the first ever official visit to Co Mayo. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carney, a former governor of the Bank of England, will meet Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin and President Catherine Connolly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He has familial links to Ireland through his grandfather Robert Carney, who was from Aghagower Westport in Co Mayo, and his grandmother Nora Moran, who was from the nearby townland of Mace. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He will visit both Ireland and Paris on his way to attend the upcoming 2026 G7 Leader\u2019s Summit in Evian, France. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIreland and France are two of Canada\u2019s closest and longest-standing partners,\u201d Carney said. \u201cIn an increasingly uncertain world, we are deepening these ties \u2013 and those across the G7 \u2013 to build greater certainty, security, and prosperity for Canadians and our partners across the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His official schedule will see him in Dublin on Saturday, where he will hold a meeting with the Taoiseach and will also be a guest at an official dinner in Dublin Castle. Carney will then travel to Mayo to meet President Connolly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The meeting comes in advance of the ratification of CETA, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, between the EU and Canada. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/05\/12\/canadian-pm-tells-irish-business-leaders-of-desire-for-closer-trade-links\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney tells Irish business leaders of Canada\u2019s desire for closer trade linksOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier this year, a speech that Carney gave at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos attracted international attention, advocating for \u201cmiddle power\u201d countries to form greater ties. The speech was broadly understood to be prompting countries to form alliances that would allow them rely less on the US. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Taoiseach said he was \u201clooking forward\u201d to meeting Carney. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe prime minister is proud of his Irish heritage, and we will be discussing ways to strengthen our bilateral relations even further,\u201d Martin said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCanada is an important economic partner for Ireland, with strong trade in goods and services in both directions.
