With the Philadelphia taking center stage for America\u2019s 250th anniversary celebration, the City of Brotherly Love is also serving as a hotbed for some major sporting events<\/a> this summer.<\/p>\n

One of those events is the FIFA World Cup.<\/a><\/p>\n

One of 11 different cities in the United States to host soccer’s biggest event, Philadelphia is expected to come alive for the World Cup<\/a> and showcase its lively tourism, food, and sports scenes as it welcomes in fans from all over the world, including those of the nine different teams to play in the 215 during group stage play.<\/p>\n

Here’s all you need to know about Philadelphia:<\/p>\n

What games are in Philadelphia?<\/p>\n

There are six games in Philadelphia, five in the group stage and one in the knockout rounds:<\/p>\n

June 14: Ivory Coast vs. Ecuador at 7 p.m. ET<\/p>\n

June 19: Brazil vs. Haiti at 9 p.m. ET<\/p>\n

June 22: France vs. Iraq at 5 p.m. ET<\/p>\n

June 25: Curacao vs. Ivory Coast at 4 p.m. ET<\/p>\n

June 27: Croatia vs. Ghana at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n

Where are the games in Philadelphia being played?<\/p>\n

The six World Cup games in Philadelphia are being played at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> of the National Football League. It’ll be known as “Philadelphia Stadium” during the tournament.<\/p>\n

The stadium hosted three friendly soccer matches two years ago, including Argentina vs. El Salvador, Peru vs. El Salvador, and a Premier League matchup between Liverpool and Arsenal. It is also a frequent site of the annual Army-Navy Game in December.<\/p>\n

With the stadium located in South Philadelphia’s Sports Complex neighborhood, and away from downtown Center City, the easiest way to get around town is by using the city’s public transportation, SEPTA.<\/a><\/p>\n

Flying into Philadelphia International Airport, and don’t want to rent a car? SEPTA offers a 25-minute train ride<\/a> from the airport \u2014 which makes stops at Terminals A and B and then between Terminals C & D and E & F \u2014 into Center City. You can also pick up this line at 30th Street Station (the local Amtrak station) on the Market Street Line that goes into Center City and City Hall, and get off at the Suburban Station or the Jefferson Station if you do.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re staying in Center City, take SEPTA\u2019s Broad Street Subway Line (“B Line”)<\/a> to the Sports Complex on game day. A one-way fare is $2.90 per person. Of note, rides leaving NRG Station (the stop for the stadium) are free starting at halftime and will continue until two hours after the match concludes.<\/p>\n

You can also get to the stadium with one of SEPTA’s regional rails (if you are staying outside the city) and bus routes. Prefer to get a workout in after eating all those cheesesteaks? You can either take the 3.8-mile walk (roughly an hour-plus walk) down Broad Street from City Hall, or use an Indego bike, which will have drop-off\/pick-up bike racks at Broad & Pattison and 10th St. & Phillies Way near the stadium.<\/p>\n

Coming from New Jersey? You can use the PATCO Speed Line<\/a> and then walk over to the SEPTA station to get onto the Broad Street Subway Line. It’s worth noting that PATCO will not provide free rides back from the stadium, like SEPTA is doing on the Broad Street line.<\/p>\n

Where to stay in Philadelphia?<\/p>\n

Most, if not all, the hotels in Philadelphia are located in or near Center City. To stay within walking distance of all the major tourism sites, anything around City Hall, Rittenhouse Square and Market Street will be your best bet. It’s a rather walkable city, so you can get from Point A to Point B quickly and easily.<\/p>\n

The closest hotels to the stadium include Live! Casino & Hotel, located behind Citizens Bank Park in the Sports Complex, and a Courtyard Marriott, located in the Navy Yard (a 5-minute walk under the I-95 freeway from the stadium), but both likely have limited availability at this point.<\/p>\n

In a city as big, historic, and culturally rich as Philadelphia, there are endless places to eat \u2014 whether on the go or dining in \u2014 and you\u2019ll likely feel like you\u2019ve only scratched the surface by the end of your trip. There are plenty of small mom-and-pop shops and bars\/taverns to hit up as well, making it impossible to select a few.<\/p>\n

Here are a few favorites:<\/p>\n

Reading Terminal Market<\/a>: Ranked as the No. 1 “Best Public Market in America” by USA TODAY’s 10Best contest,<\/a> it spans an entire city block and has over 80 vendors, making it entirely possible that you could literally eat breakfast, lunch and dinner there every day! Make sure to get some Bassetts ice cream on the way out.<\/p>\n

Angelo’s Pizzeria<\/a>: In a city with a cheesesteak place on every corner, this is perhaps the best cheesesteak in the city. Located on 9th & Fitzwater St., Angelo’s (which also has pizza) is a hot commodity and only opens Tuesday through Sunday, so make sure to get there early or be prepared to wait in line. Note: It’s cash only, but there is an ATM there for use.<\/p>\n

Stogie Joe’s Tavern<\/a>: Tucked in along the Passyunk Ave block, this South Philly staple is a great tavern to get something to eat, from its homemade pizza to sandwiches to pasta and seafood, or even just grab a beer to watch a game. It was also featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”<\/p>\n

Franklin Fountain<\/a>: Ice Cream scoops in a wonton carrier? Yes! This Old City-located parlor is the perfect stop for a cool treat, whether you\u2019re escaping the heat during a tourism day or capping off dinner.<\/p>\n

Pop’s Water Ice<\/a>: It wouldn’t be a trip to Philly without some Wooder Ice. This South Philly mom-and-pop staple is just a block off the Oregon Ave. station for the Broad Street Subway Line. Suggestion: Eat your Wooder Ice with a pretzel, either a Philly soft pretzel or a pretzel rod.<\/p>\n

Old City:<\/a> Home to all the historical landmarks in the city, there are a ton of great places to eat here.<\/p>\n

Manayunk Neighborhood:<\/a> Just a short Uber ride outside of Center City, Manayunk has some great bars and restaurants, especially along Main Street, which makes this neighborhood a 2-for-1 deal if you don’t have tickets to the matches. Personal favorites include The Rook<\/a> and Manayunk Brewing Company.<\/a><\/p>\n

What else to do in Philadelphia?<\/p>\n

Like its food scene, Philadelphia offers plenty to do for tourists, especially in Old City, where historic landmarks \u2014 like Ben Franklin’s gravestone and where Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag \u2014 and museums are all within walking distance of each other.<\/p>\n

Independence Hall<\/a>: As Nicolas Cage\u2019s character Ben Gates says in “National Treasure,” it\u2019s time to “steal the Declaration of Independence!” While you won\u2019t be doing that, you can tour the rooms where it was signed. Tickets go quickly<\/a> when required, so plan ahead \u2014 though none are needed from July 1\u20134.<\/p>\n

Liberty Bell<\/a>: Located just across the street from Independence Hall, you have your chance to take a photo with the Liberty Bell.<\/a> No tickets are needed for this.<\/p>\n

Mitchell & Ness Store<\/a>: Located in Center City, this is like Christmas morning for diehard sports fans, with a plethora of vintage and authentic sports memorabilia.<\/p>\n

Franklin Institute<\/a>: Looking to do something with the kids, or just a fan of science? This museum, located off the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, is the spot. It has a real moving train inside, and it was also featured in “National Treasure.”<\/p>\n

Valley Forge National Park<\/a>: A short drive outside of the city, Valley Forge National Park allows you to see where George Washington and the Continental Army\u00a0stood during the Revolutionary War. You can drive around the 10-mile loop of the Encampment Tour and make stops at nine major tour stops.<\/p>\n

Atlantic City:<\/a> Philadelphia’s proximity to the Jersey Shore makes it entirely possible to add a Beach Day to your itinerary. NJ Transit provides train transportation<\/a> to and from Atlantic City through 30th Street Station. It’s also just over an hour’s drive if you’d prefer to have a car down there.<\/p>\n
