{"id":80926,"date":"2026-06-09T16:35:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T16:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/80926\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T16:35:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T16:35:16","slug":"for-sale-kfc-founder-colonel-sanders-former-mississauga-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/80926\/","title":{"rendered":"For sale: KFC founder Colonel Sanders&#8217; former Mississauga home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Ontario home where Colonel Sanders, KFC founder and face of the fast-food brand, once lived recently hit the real estate market with an asking price of $1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When Harland David Sanders, accompanied by his wife Claudia, moved north in 1965 to oversee the expansion and operations of the brand then known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, they settled on 1337 Melton Drive, \u201ca modest bungalow near the corner of Dixie Avenue and The Queensway\u201d in Mississauga as their home, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmississauga.ca\/chapter-11-colonel-sanders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Visit Mississauga;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Visit Mississauga&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Visit Mississauga<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Sanders lived in Mississauga for part of the year until his 1980 death in Louisville, Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sanders was 75 at the time and already a millionaire, having sold off most of his franchises to a group of U.S. investors a year prior, but he retained franchising rights and stayed on as the trademark and quality controller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sanders himself originally hailed from Indiana, and while he first sold his fried chicken at a roadside restaurant in Kentucky during the Great Depression \u2014 during which time Governor Rub Lafooon bestowed him with the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel \u2014 the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened in 1952 in Salt Lake City, Utah. A store remains there to this day. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2014\/11\/20\/20553178\/utah-man-who-founded-first-kfc-dies-at-95\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:original franchisee;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;original franchisee&quot;}\" class=\"link \">original franchisee<\/a> was also the first to use Sanders\u2019 likeness in branding, created the \u201cfinger lickin\u2019 good\u201d catchphrase and was the first to introduce the cardboard bucket of chicken.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sanders later abandoned his own restaurant and started travelling the U.S., franchising his \u201cOriginal Recipe\u201d to restaurateurs and turning it into the largest fast-food chain in the U.S. at one point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Upon his relocation to Canada, Sanders turned to Toronto lawyer Terrence Donnelly, whom he\u2019d met at the CNE Food Pavilion during an earlier visit, to assist in expansion.
