A police officer in Canada was killed in a shootout Thursday during an investigation into a shooting at the US Consulate in Toronto<\/a> earlier this year, with the \u201carmed and dangerous\u201d suspect still on the run.<\/p>\n

Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, died following a gun battle with 19-year-old suspect Zara Jabbi, who is connected to multiple shooting incidents in Toronto, including one at the US Consulate in March,\u00a0the Toronto Star reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A second victim, 19, was also taken to the hospital with wounds, according to an emergency dispatch call shared by the Toronto Star.<\/p>\n

Jabbi was not detained during the shootout and is still on the run and considered \u201carmed and dangerous,\u201d according to authorities.<\/p>\n

The shooting comes as Toronto prepares to host its first FIFA World Cup match on Friday.<\/p>\n

In the investigation into the March consulate shooting, police described seeing two male suspects exiting and firing at the building with what appeared to be a handgun before getting back in the vehicle and driving off.<\/p>\n

No one inside the \u201chighly fortified\u201d building was harmed, police said at the time.<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s Police Chief gave a tearful tribute to his fallen officer, as he urged the suspect to surrender.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a very heavy sorrow in our community right now,\u201d said Chief Myron Demkiw, through tears, as\u00a0reported by CBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urge you to turn yourself in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Pinizzotto was conducting a search warrant at a property in the northwest of the city at around 5:42 a.m. local time when he was shot.<\/p>\n

It was among a batch of search warrants being executed across the city in relation to \u201ca number of shootings, including at the United States Consulate,\u201d Demkiw said.<\/p>\n

US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra acknowledged that Thursday\u2019s fatal officer shooting was related to a national security probe into March\u2019s incident at the consulate.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts, our prayers are with the family of the police person who was killed,\u201d he told reporters while speaking at a conference on US-Canada trade.<\/p>\n

However, he added that it was too soon to confirm the link between March\u2019s shooting and Thursday\u2019s incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the responsibility of the Toronto police, the mayor,\u201d Hoekstra said.<\/p>\n

It comes after US authorities in May arrested Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al Saadi in connection with six terrorist related offences, including masterminding the consulate shooting.<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s Mayor Olivia Chow also paid tribute to Pinizzotto and his family, calling the death \u201cheartbreaking news\u201d for the city.<\/p>\n
