{"id":85347,"date":"2026-06-12T11:59:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T11:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/85347\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T11:59:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T11:59:05","slug":"ahead-of-g7-carney-softens-tone-toward-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/85347\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahead of G7, Carney softens tone toward Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 Canadian <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-liberal-leader-prime-minister-carney-trump-cd44b5930a2846c1d2c5f3ba5bdea3bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> became a symbol of middle power resistance after a celebrated speech earlier this year, but he is expected to be more muted in his criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump at <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/g7-summit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an upcoming summit<\/a> in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-trump-canada-trade-davos-bessent-tariffs-8e83cdd9443f6f4a523b6e05fd63843a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speech at the World Economic Forum<\/a> in Davos, Switzerland, helped make him an international political star in January, when he declared the global rules-based order over and condemned coercion by great powers on smaller countries. The prime minister received widespread praise and attention <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carney-canada-davos-trump-eee151f749f35c8b30a9ff4a9525d0be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for his remarks<\/a> and upstaged Trump at the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>But the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/group-of-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Group of Seven summit of industrialized democracies<\/a> that begins Monday in France comes ahead of the scheduled July 1 review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, the latest iteration of the North American free-trade pact that has intertwined the economies of the United States, Mexico and Canada since the early 1990s. It is a crucial moment in trade talks, and Trump said this week that he may not renew the deal.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70% of Canada\u2019s exports go to the U.S., so preserving the accord is critical for Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian historian Robert Bothwell said Trump is more of a problem for Carney \u201cthan anybody else because we are more exposed to the United States than anybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump leaves for the G7 summit right after he hosts UFC fights at the White House on Sunday for his 80th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The summit will unfold as tensions are ramping up between Trump and Canada. One of the world\u2019s most durable and amicable alliances \u2014 born of geography, heritage and centuries of common interests \u2014 is broken, as seen in several recent examples of tension between leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ontario-ford-trump-tariffs-supreme-court-canada-5afcbc221e6cec49d6ffa8729a899e4e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Premier Doug Ford<\/a>, the leader of Canada\u2019s most populous province, had a reception with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington canceled Monday at the last minute. Vic Fedeli, one of Ford\u2019s ministers, said if Trump forced the chamber to cancel, \u201cFord should be wearing that as a badge of honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump said again this week that the U.S. doesn\u2019t need anything that Canada has. Carney has set a goal for Canada to double its non-U.S. exports in the next decade, saying Trump\u2019s trade war is causing a chill in investment.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>In other developments, the opening of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-carney-gordie-howe-bridge-trump-5ff27f894e01f759a415740e6793b1b6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a major Canadian bridge<\/a> across the Detroit River that Trump previously threatened to block was delayed Thursday due to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gordie-howe-bridge-us-canada-trump-detroit-12af9790c89b04969194802493bf0d46\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unresolved issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s actions, including launching <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-trade-trump-europe-canada-mexico-china-06f20e415ec7c706194511c84350b84b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a trade war<\/a> and suggesting Canada become the 51st U.S. state, have infuriated Canadians and created the political environment for Carney to win the job of prime minister after promising to confront Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Trump administration officials keep noting that only two countries, China and Canada, retaliated against America in the trade war. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says Canada\u2019s retaliatory measures are a major issue in talks.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel B\u00e9land, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said Carney seems to have moderated his tone toward the Trump administration to avoid worsening relations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a clear tension between what Prime Minister Carney said in his Davos speech about middle powers standing up to hegemons and his attempt to nudge the U.S. administration \u2018in the right direction\u2019 with regard to the USMCA review and trade policy more generally,\u201d B\u00e9land said.<\/p>\n<p>Carney has downplayed Trump\u2019s most recent comments about Canada becoming the 51st state.<\/p>\n<p>Canada and Mexico want the USMCA to be renewed for another 16 years. Trump has mused about withdrawing from it.
