{"id":87739,"date":"2026-06-14T10:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T10:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/87739\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T10:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T10:34:08","slug":"canadian-prime-minister-heads-west-to-ancestral-homeland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/87739\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian prime minister heads west to ancestral homeland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has travelled to County Mayo on the second day of his state visit to the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2xpv8v7v9o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:spent Saturday in Dublin;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;spent Saturday in Dublin&quot;}\" class=\"link \">spent Saturday in Dublin<\/a> with Taoiseach (Irish PM) Miche\u00e1l Martin, is due to meet his cousins on Sunday in Aughagower &#8211; the village his grandparents, Robert and Nora Moran, left when they emigrated to Canada in 1925.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney has said he is proud of his family heritage and described his Irish ancestry as a &#8220;big part of who I am&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Irish President Catherine Connolly is due to meet Carney in Westport House on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During his Mayo visit, the Canadian prime minister and his wife Diana Fox Carney are expected to attend Mass at the parish church and visit a graveyard where some of his relatives are buried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney plans to meet more than 20 of his cousins including Pat Carney and Maureen O&#8217;Malley, first cousins of his father and two of the prime minister&#8217;s closest Irish relatives.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Carney steps out of a shiny black car. Behind him a solider salutes. \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/7531e29c5dfd0d3c4c7ff1081ed35f56.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Martin said the visit would be an opportunity for Carney to celebrate and explore his Irish heritage [Reuters]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Maureen&#8217;s daughter, Rosaleen Heraty, told Ireland&#8217;s national broadcaster RT\u00c9 about the family connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Mam and Pat&#8217;s father was John Carney and he was the brother of Robert Carney, who is Mark Carney&#8217;s grandfather. Imagine, his grandson is the prime minister of Canada,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all we can talk about, generations of the Carney clan, and we are so excited to finally meet him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;If you compare photos of him and his grandfather Robert, there is an uncanny likeness. I noticed it when I spotted him on the telly when he was Governor of the Bank of England. I saw the name Carney and saw the face and said it to Mam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;She hardly missed a beat and just said &#8216;ah yeah, we haven&#8217;t seen them for years&#8217;,&#8221; said Heraty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Heraty, manager at the Townhall Theatre in Westport, said she has been busy preparing for the civic reception on Sunday evening to honour Carney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During the ceremony Carney will be presented with a commemorative history of the Carneys, written by local Westport historian Harry Hughes, alongside fellow researchers and editors James Kelly and Miche\u00e1l Casey.<\/p>\n<p>Tenant farmers who endured famine aftermath<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Carney and Moran families were tenant farmers on the estate of Lord Sligo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Carney homestead, located in the townland of Ayle, was a standard rural dwelling of the time: a thatched cottage with two windows in the front.
