{"id":88003,"date":"2026-06-14T15:22:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T15:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/88003\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T15:22:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T15:22:15","slug":"canadas-carney-charmed-by-irish-county-filled-with-dozens-of-cousins-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/88003\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s Carney charmed by Irish county filled with dozens of cousins \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An emotional high point came in the nearby crossroads village of Aghagower, where Carney\u2019s paternal grandparents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/2026\/06\/13\/canadian-prime-minister-mark-carneys-grandfathers-heroics-during-the-civil-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert Carney<\/a> and Nora Moran, grew up on adjoining farms on the lands of Lord Sligo before emigrating together to Canada in 1925.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting to meet Carney outside St. Patrick\u2019s Church in Aghagower were dozens of cousins and hundreds of people from the surrounding community, including at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/2501413533664470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">impressively articulate local boy<\/a>, as well as Ireland\u2019s prime minister, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Carney tried to shake everyone\u2019s hands, all the while noting that Mass was supposed to start at 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/55332795347_674a8a7030_k-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8596442\"  \/>Mark Carney, Canada Prime Minister, is greeted by Minister Dara Calleary in Ireland West airport. | Government of Ireland<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to hold up the service,\u201d he said at one point before stopping to take a picture with 17-month-old Malachy Morgan, who had arrived with his Irish-Canadian mother donning a Montreal Canadiens jersey and nibbling on a toy hockey stick.
