It wasn\u2019t until 2020, though, that the first Trump administration officially endorsed the practice, when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/importation-final-rule.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">published a regulation<\/a> allowing states and Indian tribes to propose import plans. The Biden administration affirmed this rule with an executive order in 2021. And Florida became the first state to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/01\/05\/ron-desantis-import-drugs-canada-biden-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earn FDA approval<\/a> in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But state importation programs have proved extremely difficult to carry out, even with bipartisan support. Florida has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/02\/desantis-florida-canada-drug-imports-00759891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">yet to actually import any drugs from Canada<\/a>, in part due to pushback from the Canadian pharmaceutical industry and fears the program will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/drug-products\/drug-shortages\/information-consumers\/canada-regulations-prevent-distribute-drugs-outside-canada.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">affect Canada\u2019s drug supply<\/a>.
