{"id":92040,"date":"2026-06-17T10:39:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/92040\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T10:39:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:39:06","slug":"head-of-canadas-top-bank-says-us-trade-deal-too-crucial-to-cancel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/92040\/","title":{"rendered":"Head of Canada&#8217;s top bank says US trade deal too crucial to &#8216;cancel&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\tRead:   &lt; 1 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The North American free trade agreement is too important for the United States, Canada and Mexico to ditch, the head of Canada\u2019s largest bank said Tuesday, voicing confidence the deal would endure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump said last week that he was not \u201clooking to renew\u201d the agreement known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianaffairs.news\/2026\/02\/06\/the-true-worst-case-scenario-for-cusma-talks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CUSMA<\/a>, which he signed and praised during his first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is not renewed by July 1, the CUSMA will remain in force but will be subject to annual reviews, unless one party withdraws entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has described the deal as \u201cirrelevant\u201d and insisted the United States does not need anything Canada produces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Royal Bank of Canada CEO Dave McKay, the fact that there has been no discussion of terminating the CUSMA is crucial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s been no mention of cancelling the agreement,\u201d McKay told reporters in Toronto at an event hosted by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCancellation means you\u2019re giving notice of a permanent withdrawal.
