The partnership was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on May 25, 2026, at the Maha Chulalongkorn Building by Prof. Dr.\u00a0Wilert\u00a0Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, and Mr. Surachai\u00a0Nimlaor, President of TCMA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On this occasion,\u00a0H.E. Ms. Ping\u00a0Kitnikone, Ambassador of Canada to Thailand;\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Phirun\u00a0Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.dcce.go.th\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcce.go.th\/\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Climate Change and Environment<\/a>; and\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Theeratat\u00a0Isarangkun\u00a0Na Ayutthaya, Deputy Director-General of the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.diw.go.th\/webdiw\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.diw.go.th\/webdiw\/\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Industrial Works<\/a>, delivered congratulatory remarks.\u00a0Prof. Dr.\u00a0Pranut\u00a0Potiyaraj, Dean of the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.sc.chula.ac.th\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sc.chula.ac.th\/\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Science<\/a>\u00a0at Chulalongkorn University, also\u00a0participated\u00a0in the signing ceremony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This collaboration reflects Chulalongkorn University\u2019s role in advancing knowledge, research, and innovation in environmental and clean energy fields together with industry, government agencies, and domestic and international partners. The initiative aims to develop a prototype \u201cMobile Carbon Capture Unit,\u201d a mobile system that can eventually be applied in Thailand\u2019s industrial sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Dr.\u00a0Wilert\u00a0Puriwat\u00a0stated that the partnership\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0the university\u2019s role as a \u201cStrategic Knowledge Partner\u201d that bridges academic knowledge with practical applications while also developing \u201cGreen Talent\u201d to support industrial transformation.\u00a0\u201cThis collaboration will strengthen Chula\u2019s role in advancing low-carbon technologies and preparing future talent for the green transition. By linking research, innovation, and workforce development, we hope to support the sustainable growth of Thailand\u2019s green economy in the years ahead,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the project\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0how universities, industry, and government can work together to tackle complex challenges that no single sector can address alone. Such collaboration helps bridge the gap between research and real-world implementation, enabling promising technologies to be tested, refined, and deployed at scale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that Chulalongkorn University is committed to ensuring that academic research delivers tangible benefits to society. He expressed confidence that the partnership with TCMA would accelerate the transfer of knowledge from the laboratory to industry, creating practical solutions that contribute to Thailand\u2019s long-term economic and environmental resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Surachai\u00a0Nimlaor, President of TCMA, said that the collaboration reflects the proactive role of industry in driving climate commitments through a Public\u2013Private Partnership (PPP) mechanism linking industry, academia, government agencies, and international partners, including\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change.html\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)<\/a>, the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.unido.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unido.org\/\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/gccassociation.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/gccassociation.org\/\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA)<\/a>. The goal is to accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon cement industry in line with the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.thaicma.or.th\/en\/ebook_detail\/3\/197\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thaicma.or.th\/en\/ebook_detail\/3\/197\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thailand 2050 Net Zero Cement and Concrete Roadmap<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cThis collaboration brings together academic\u00a0expertise, industry experience, and international knowledge to advance carbon capture technology. Through pilot projects in the Saraburi Sandbox and support from Canadian experts, we aim to test, refine, and scale up solutions that can help accelerate the industry\u2019s low-carbon transition,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Ambassador H.E. Ms. Ping\u00a0Kitnikone\u00a0said Canada was pleased to support the initiative, which reflects more than 65 years of cooperation between Thailand and Canada as well as a shared commitment to addressing climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy combining\u00a0expertise, technology, and experience in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this initiative creates new opportunities for cooperation between Canadian and Thai partners. Through support from Canadian experts, personnel development, and pilot projects in Thailand, we hope to help move promising research into practical solutions that support the transition to a low-carbon economy,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Phirun\u00a0Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, noted that the cement industry plays a key role in Thailand\u2019s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve its Net Zero 2050 target while strengthening climate resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis partnership helps connect innovation with policy. By testing\u00a0new approaches\u00a0in the Saraburi Sandbox, we can better understand what works in practice and use those insights to support future policy development and wider implementation,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Theeratat\u00a0Isarangkun\u00a0Na Ayutthaya, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Industrial Works,\u00a0stated\u00a0that the initiative aligns with the \u201cOne MIND\u201d industrial policy, which integrates regulatory oversight with green industry promotion.\u00a0\u201cThe Department of Industrial Works is ready to support this collaboration\u00a0and help develop it into\u00a0a scalable industrial model that enhances the country\u2019s competitiveness,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chana\u00a0Poomee, Honorary President of TCMA and\u00a0Chairman\u00a0of the\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.thaicma.or.th\/en\/internationalcooperation\/international\/afcm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thaicma.or.th\/en\/internationalcooperation\/international\/afcm\" type=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ASEAN Federation of Cement Manufacturers (AFCM)<\/a>, described the collaboration as another\u00a0important step\u00a0in positioning Thailand as a \u201cregional model\u201d for industrial decarbonization.\u00a0\u201cBringing together government agencies, industry, and academia through public-private partnerships (PPP) will help connect policy, technology, research, and workforce development. This integrated approach can support the growth of a low-carbon industrial ecosystem and provide a model for wider adoption,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Dr.\u00a0Pranut\u00a0Potiyaraj, Dean of the Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University, said the project\u00a0provides\u00a0an opportunity to test research under real industrial conditions, particularly at cement plants in Saraburi Province. He expressed confidence that the initiative would deliver measurable results in the near term while also\u00a0inspiring greater\u00a0interest among younger generations in climate and carbon reduction challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Faculty of Science is conducting research not only on carbon capture technologies but also on plant-based approaches that harness natural processes to absorb carbon.
