Veteran right-hander Sonny Gray made it clear he wouldn\u2019t \u201cspeak on behalf of the group,\u201d but he didn\u2019t mince words when discussing the state of the 2026 Red Sox.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can speak on behalf of myself,\u201d Gray said Thursday, after the team suffered a sweep by the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. \u201cIt\u2019s very frustrating. We\u2019re not good.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re just not a good team right now, and that just a fact.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Red Sox are 29-43 on the season, including four straight losses, with 14 games under .500 their lowest low since they were 15 games under in September 2020. They are 16 games back in the American League East, and plummeting out of the playoff picture like a piano from a skyscraper window in an old-timey animation.<\/p>\n
Gray pitched seven innings in Thursday\u2019s 4-3 loss, their ninth consecutive series finale loss at Fenway dating back to April 23. He incurred three earned runs on six hits, but it was his fourth consecutive quality start nevertheless.<\/p>\n
The bigger problem, as is too often the case, was the offense. Boston only managed five hits in the contest, four of them clustered between the seventh and eighth innings. Their ire was on display throughout the early innings, and in the clubhouse postgame. Andruw Monasterio flung both bat and helmet after striking out to end Yesavage\u2019s third perfect inning. And boos rained down from the semi-crowded stands in the bottom of the fourth when Abreu\u2019s one-out flyout to center was too shallow to score Gasper, who had ended Yesavage\u2019s bid for perfection with a leadoff ground-rule double and advanced third on Rafaela\u2019s sacrifice bunt.<\/p>\n
Fellow veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who homered to lead off the eighth inning, spoke with the front office\u2019s likely pivot to selling at the Aug. 3 trade deadline clearly on his mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully we just go to the west coast and play well; west coast trips are always tough, so we got to find a way to go out there and win ball games,\u201d Kiner-Falefa said. \u201cWe got to go on a streak, and we need to go on a streak now. So, yeah, I mean, it\u2019s time to go on a streak, or we\u2019re going to be having new players in this locker room, so we just got to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
