Two people were injured in a fire in Owen Sound Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n

The Owen Sound fire department says firefighters, police and paramedics responded.<\/p>\n

The apartment on 4th Avenue on the city\u2019s east side was smoke filled when firefighters arrived, but the fire was extinguished before they got there.<\/p>\n

11 firefighters responded to the incident. Fire crews ventilated the apartment to remove smoke and assisted paramedics with patient care on scene.<\/p>\n

They say two people had burn injuries. One was treated and later released from hospital, while the second was transferred to a Toronto hospital burn unit for specialized care.<\/p>\n

The fire department says the cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking. Damage is estimated at approximately $10,000.<\/p>\n

They say, \u201cIf a fire starts in a pot or pan on the stove, carefully slide a lid over the container to smother the flames and turn off the heat source if it is safe to do so. Never move a burning pot or pan, and never use water on a grease fire, as it can cause the fire to spread rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fire department adds, \u201cCooking should never be left unattended. Staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping a close watch on food being prepared can help prevent fires and injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Support local journalism!
