{"id":98295,"date":"2026-06-22T07:35:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/98295\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T07:35:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:35:07","slug":"australia-and-canada-sign-a-1-75b-deal-to-build-long-range-radar-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/98295\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia and Canada sign a $1.75B deal to build long-range radar in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) \u2014 Australia and Canada signed a $1.75 billion export agreement on Monday to build an Australian-designed long-range radar system in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Defense Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/australia-marles-defense-spending-iran-war-a708e6d4f03bb3619349b7f312403336\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Marles<\/a> and Canadian Secretary of State (Defense Procurement) Stephen Fuhr signed the first phase of a pact to provide early warning radar coverage from the Canada-United States border into the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat this really means is that Australia and Canada are now partners in terms of the future development of the Over-the-Horizon Radar,\u201d Marles told reporters at the Australian Parliament House in the capital Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is now a very strategic dimension to the relationship,\u201d Marles added.<\/p>\n<p>Fuhr said the two British Commonwealth countries, both of which are partners in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-spying-five-eyes-britain-d2d1c500dd91e4b3d15bf22edb133568\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Five Eyes<\/a> intelligence-sharing alliance that also includes the United States, Britain and New Zealand, had \u201cstood shoulder-to-shoulder for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the world adjusts to its new strategic and economic realities, I can\u2019t think of a stronger partner to work with more than Australia,\u201d Fuhr said at a joint press conference with Marles.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced he\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-carney-arctic-circle-greenland-d44e557453bc402a8c4e617041e262b0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chosen Australia\u2019s radar system<\/a> over comparable U.S. technology shortly after he came to power last year.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Carney became the first Canadian prime minister to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/australia-carney-canada-iran-regret-ab529749962be194ad9501cbcac6f9e9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visit Australia<\/a> in 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, Carney and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese agreed to increase cooperation on defense technologies, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.<\/p>\n<p>BAE Systems Australia said in a statement it will support both governments in developing the Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian system, developed over 40 years, works by refracting high-frequency electromagnetic waves off the ionosphere to detect distant objects that are invisible to conventional radars because of Earth&#8217;s curvature.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is Australia\u2019s largest ever defense export.
