{"id":98511,"date":"2026-06-22T12:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T12:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/98511\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T12:41:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T12:41:08","slug":"canada-prime-minister-mark-carney-snubs-us-to-sign-1-75b-long-range-radar-deal-with-australia-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/98511\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney snubs US to sign $1.75B long-range radar deal with Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a data-ylk=\"slk:Australia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/australia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> and <a data-ylk=\"slk:Canada;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/canada\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a> have signed a $1.75 billion (\u00a31.38bn) export agreement to build an Australian-designed long-range radar system.<\/p>\n<p>The deal, inked on Monday by Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles and Canadian Secretary of State (Defense Procurement) Stephen Fuhr, marks the first phase of a pact to provide early warning radar coverage from the Canada-<a data-ylk=\"slk:United States;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/united-states\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a> border into the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Arctic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/arctic\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What this really means is that Australia and Canada are now partners in terms of the future development of the Over-the-Horizon Radar,&#8221; Marles told reporters at the Australian Parliament House in the capital <a data-ylk=\"slk:Canberra;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/canberra\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Canberra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is now a very strategic dimension to the relationship,&#8221; Fuhr said at a joint press conference with Marles.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister <a data-ylk=\"slk:Mark Carney;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/mark-carney\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a> announced he&#8217;d chosen Australia&#8217;s radar system over comparable U.S. technology shortly after he came to power last year.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Carney became the first Canadian prime minister to visit Australia in 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, Carney and his Australian counterpart <a data-ylk=\"slk:Anthony Albanese;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/anthony-albanese\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Albanese<\/a> agreed to increase cooperation on defense technologies, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.<\/p>\n<p>BAE Systems Australia said in a statement it will support both governments in developing the Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian system, developed over 40 years, works by refracting high-frequency electromagnetic waves off the ionosphere to detect distant objects that are invisible to conventional radars because of <a data-ylk=\"slk:Earth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/earth\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s curvature.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is Australia&#8217;s largest ever defense export.
