How long will extreme heat last?<\/p>\n
According to the Met Office very hot conditions are expected to continue until at least Thursday across much of England and Wales.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson said: “Temperatures above 30C could persist for several consecutive days, while overnight temperatures remain exceptionally high in some locations”.<\/p>\n
The Met Office says cooler conditions may begin to edge in from the west late next week, although confidence in the timing and extent of any breakdown remains low.<\/p>\n
What else does Paul Hudson say?<\/p>\n
As well as pointing to potential record breaking daytime temperatures Hudson said:<\/p>\n
“Night-time temperatures will also be very high, especially in towns and cities, not falling below 20C (68F) on some nights.”<\/p>\n
Nights when the temperature does not fall below 20C is classifies as a “tropical night” by the Met Office and are extremely rare.<\/p>\n
Long-standing June records, which were set in 1976, are expected to be broken.<\/p>\n
“Undoubtedly without climate change such temperature levels would not be possible, and scientists predict such heatwaves are likely to become increasingly common in the years to come,” Hudson added.<\/p>\n
Tips for coping in hot weather<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the NHS said: “A heatwave can affect anyone, but some people are more vulnerable, including, older people, especially those aged 65 and over babies and young children aged five and under.”<\/p>\n
NHS advice is:<\/p>\n
Keep out of the heat if you can.<\/p>\n
If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11:00 BST and 15:00 BST<\/p>\n
Wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.<\/p>\n
Have cold food and regular cold drinks. Drink extra fluids, but avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.<\/p>\n
Close windows, curtains and blinds during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down.<\/p>\n
Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees.<\/p>\n
What are the rules around schools and temperature?<\/p>\n
Pepe Di’Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders is is the former head teacher of Wales High School in Kiveton, near Rotherham.<\/p>\n
He said schools needed to adapt their timetable to cope with the hot weather.<\/p>\n
“Many schools are set up for children to be outside at lunch time in the hottest part of the day, come in and leave at certain times.<\/p>\n
“What I’d be calling for is greater flexibility, the idea of agility in the school day at this time of year.”<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Department for Education, states:<\/a> “During hot weather, we don’t normally advise schools to close.<\/p>\n “This is because school attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential, and hot weather can usually be managed safely.<\/p>\n A spokesperson, said: “School leaders should make sure they take any steps necessary to make sure children are safe and comfortable, and the heat-health alerts can guide this.<\/p>\n “Schools could consider relaxing uniform rules during hot weather to make sure pupils are comfortable.”<\/p>\n They added: “Children should wear loose, light-coloured clothing to help keep cool and sun hats with wide brims.
