Die Schauspielerin und OnlyFans-Erstellerin Maitland Ward kritisierte am Sonntag, den 10. Mai 2026, in einem Interview mit Variety die Darstellung der Figur Cassie in der dritten Staffel der HBO-Serie Euphoria. Ward warf der Produktion vor, durch realitätsferne Handlungsstränge schädliche Stereotype über Sexarbeiterinnen zu fördern.
Die Kritik entzündete sich an Szenen, in denen die von Sydney Sweeney gespielte Figur pornografische Inhalte erstellt, während sie wie ein Baby gekleidet ist oder Tierkostüme trägt. Ward sieht darin eine Herabwürdigung ihrer Branche.
«In the climate we’re in, that they dressed her up as a baby to make pornographic OnlyFans content was beyond troubling and again serves to perpetuate stereotypes that sex workers have no moral compass and that they will do anything for money,» erklärte Maitland Ward, die ehemalige Darstellerin aus Boy Meets World.
Die 49-Jährige betonte zudem, dass die Serie fälschlicherweise eine Verbindung zwischen freiwilliger Sexarbeit und kriminellen Strukturen suggeriere.

«And there’s always this untrue stigma that somehow sex work is synonymous with sex trafficking and abuse. And they just said, let’s make a joke of it. That is so funny. I’m not laughing.» fügte Ward hinzu.
Serienschöpfer Sam Levinson hatte die kontroversen Szenen zuvor gegenüber dem Hollywood Reporter im April verteidigt. Er erklärte, dass die Absurdität der Situation, etwa wenn eine Haushälterin die Aufnahmen macht, eine bewusste humoristische Ebene darstelle.
«[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor, but what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it,» sagte Sam Levinson, Schöpfer von Euphoria.
Levinson erläuterte weiter, dass das Ziel der Produktion darin bestehe, die Illusion der Figur zu durchbrechen.
«What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion — the gag is to jump out, to break the wall.» gab Levinson an.
Ward reagierte auf diese Aussagen mit Unverständnis und bezeichnete die Herangehensweise der Autoren als bloße Männerphantasien, die den Berufsstand der Content-Ersteller ins Lächerliche ziehen würden.
«That speaks volumes to me about why this OnlyFans storyline is being represented in the way that it is. It’s not being taken seriously,» entgegnete Maitland Ward gegenüber Variety.
Die Schauspielerin zog Parallelen zu ihren eigenen Erfahrungen in der Unterhaltungsindustrie und kritisierte die mangelnde Tiefe in der Charakterentwicklung.
«It reminds me of when I pranced around in lingerie on Boy Meets World. It’s just the guys in the writer’s room coming up with their fantasies. To take someone so traditionally blonde and beautiful with the biggest boobs and dress her up as a dog and baby is really bizarre, but at the same time so expected in Hollywood.» erläuterte Ward.
Neben Ward meldeten sich auch andere Branchenvertreter zu Wort, um das Bild der Arbeit auf Plattformen wie OnlyFans zu korrigieren. Taila Maddison, ebenfalls auf der Plattform aktiv, erklärte gegenüber Us Weekly, dass die Erfüllung von Fetischen nur einen Bruchteil ihrer täglichen Arbeit ausmache.
«I’d say that’s probably only 20 [to] 30 percent of what my subscribers want and what I do day to day,» sagte Taila Maddison, OnlyFans-Schöpferin.
Dennoch räumte Maddison ein, dass die Erkundung spezieller Kundenwünsche durchaus einen kreativen Aspekt ihrer Tätigkeit darstellen kann.
«That said, kinks are one of the more fun aspects to explore. It’s always interesting when someone asks for something and you think, ‘Wow, I’ve never even considered that people would be into that.’» ergänzte Maddison im Gespräch mit Us Weekly.
