Volkswagen Signals Potential for Deeper Job Reductions

Volkswagen’s management has cautioned that an additional 50,000 positions might need to be eliminated to maintain competitiveness against automotive rivals, as detailed in an internal staff memo. The German manufacturer had already disclosed intentions to reduce its workforce by 50,000 roles, encompassing its Porsche and Audi divisions. Chief Executive Oliver Blume, in a memo examined by Reuters, indicated that further reductions are required because Volkswagen faces a 20% cost disadvantage compared to its competitors.

The communication noted that this scenario implies a theoretical reduction of another 50,000 jobs throughout the company’s global operations, effectively corroborating earlier reports that Volkswagen was contemplating up to 100,000 layoffs. Blume stated in the memo that the firm is currently evaluating across all brands, companies, and regions what number of adjustments are truly required and achievable.

Volkswagen, the largest automaker in Europe, has experienced declining profits due to elevated tariff expenses, fierce rivalry in the Chinese market, and demands for greater efficiency from its German production network. Blume expressed in the memo a preference for intelligent solutions rather than plant closures, and he had earlier proposed that underused factories could be converted for defense purposes or to assemble Chinese Volkswagen models within Europe.

He further mentioned in the memo that, looking toward the next decade, the company still cannot verify competitive applications for the facilities in Emden, Hanover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm during the 2030s. The company’s executives have encountered angry demands from employees for management to clarify its restructuring strategy, which Blume presented to a supervisory board on Thursday.

Reuters reported, citing informed sources, that labor representatives on the committee blocked proposals that allegedly included job cuts and the potential shutdown of four factories. Volkswagen’s official statement following the stakeholder meeting omitted any mention of layoffs or plant closures, instead outlining plans to further decrease production capacity and gradually cut its model lineup in half.
