NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – The historic clock at New Bern City Hall has been stopped at 4:07 for nearly two months, and it looks like it will stay that way into the fall.
The clock requires a full gearbox replacement at a cost of $6,000. It is serviced by the Verdin Clock Company in Ohio.
New Bern Public Information Officer Colleen Roberts says the timepiece is expected to arrive in the U.S. from Europe in mid-September. After receiving the timepiece, the Verdin Company will plan a trip to New Bern to make the installation & repair.
City officials say the original timeline they gave of 6-8 weeks is for timepieces that have already been built. The one in New Bern is a special build & they need time to source & complete parts & then assemble them for shipping.
The clock was also repaired in 2019 as part of a $130,000 project to modernize it and add automated adjustments during daylight saving time.
