NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — More than 100 children gathered at the New Bern-Craven Public Library to learn about sea turtles during an educational program hosted by the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

Participants learned how to identify various turtle species native to North Carolina. The event also featured two live turtles that allowed children to interact closely with the animals.

“Turtles are one of those animals that no matter where you live in North Carolina, you can find them in your backyard,” said Nicole Warren, outreach coordinator. “And so by getting to see some of these live turtles up close today, some of our animal ambassadors, we’re hoping to inspire some appreciation for this amazing species.”

Each child got a free book called “Turtle, turtle, watch out!” about the dangers the creatures face in the wild, and how humans can help with wildlife and ocean conservation.
