GENEVA — The Geneva Family YMCA is looking for a new director.

Todd Freelove is leaving the YMCA at 399 William St. Aug. 15 after serving a little over two years as permanent executive director and CEO. Previous to that he served as interim director following the departure of Mary Bakogiannis.

Freelove is taking a job with a local health system, said Charlie Evangelista, a member of the YMCA Board of Directors.

“He was a very hard worker and did a great job of leading the Y through our capital project transition,” Evangelista said Monday. “The board and members are very appreciative of his efforts.”

Evangelista noted that the YMCA is nearing the end of its renovation and expansion project, with the final phase being the new front entrance.

The $5 million, four-phase renovation project included a 10,000-square-foot addition. Newly upgraded spaces include a 10,000-square-foot strength and fitness center, a new senior lounge, renovated adult locker rooms, and additional community space.

“We are looking forward to bringing on a new director to continue the Y’s momentum of expanding programs and adding membership,” said Evangelista.

Freelove could not be reached for comment as of Tuesday morning.

Freelove was executive director of the Clifton Springs Area YMCA for seven years, overseeing an expansion and renovation project there as well, before leaving in July 2023. He was appointed the Geneva YMCA’s new director nearly a year later.

According to the job posting, the Geneva YMCA executive director position pays $75,000 to $95,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

“The CEO/executive director serves as the chief executive officer of the Geneva Family YMCA and is responsible for strategic leadership, financial stewardship, staff development, fundraising, community engagement, and advancing the YMCA’s mission,” the job posting says. “Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the CEO partners with volunteers, staff, donors, community organizations, and members to ensure long-term organizational sustainability and impact.”

The posting notes the director oversees a budget of more than $1 million, along with supervising three full-time staff members and approximately 65 part-time and seasonal employees.
