Two planes had to make emergency landings in two separate incidents over two days in Maine.
On Saturday, Delta Flight 5860, flying from Portland International Jetport to New York City, declared an emergency and had to return to the jetport.
According to a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines, sensors in the cockpit indicated there was smoke on the aircraft. As a precaution, the pilots turned around.
The plane landed safely, and all passengers were safety deplaned, according to airport officials.
The Portland Fire Department’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting team evaluated the aircraft, and the Delta spokesperson said no smoke was found. Officials think there may have been a faulty sensor or circuit board.
Passengers were placed on a replacement aircraft and made it to LaGuardia the same day.
On Monday, another emergency landing occurred in Bangor. Swiss Air flight LX16 from Zurich to New York City made an emergency landing at Bangor International Airport. A statement from Swiss Air said the aircraft reported smoke in the cabin and made an emergency landing out of precaution. All passengers and crew are safe, according to Swiss Air.
Officials don’t yet know what caused the smoke, but the aircraft is being inspected.
Swiss Air and Bangor International Airport are working on ways to get passengers to their destinations.
