NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — Evacuations have been ordered for several buildings near the 600 block of Hancock St. in New Bern following a reported gas leak.

Officials told WNCT the gas leak was reported at 1:40 PM today.

Officials also confirmed that they instructed everyone within a 500-foot radius to leave the area while crews from Piedmont Natural Gas worked on repairs.

New Bern Fire-Rescue is on the scene, and Piedmont Natural Gas expects the situation to be resolved at approximately 6:00 p.m.

UPDATE: Evacuees who were displaced as part of the gas leak can return to their homes and businesses.

Piedmont Natural Gas is still on scene completing repairs.
