Deep beneath the slopes of Austria’s highest ski village, construction is underway on a high-altitude renewable energy project. Regional energy provider TIWAG (Tiroler Wasserkraft AG) is building the Kühtai 2 Pumped Storage Power Plant at the ski village of Kühtai, adding a new reservoir at 2,350 meters (7,710 feet) above sea level in Tyrol’s Stubai Alps, just 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the Austrian mountain hotspot of Innsbruck.

The project operates as a giant “water battery,” storing excess solar and wind power by pumping water uphill into high-altitude reservoirs, then releasing it through turbines to generate electricity when grid demand peaks. Engineering consultancy AFRY, which manages the project’s 66-month execution design, noted in a press release that pumped storage accounts for over 94% of global energy storage capacity.

To protect the surrounding mountain environment, the entire powerhouse sits 174 meters (571 feet) underground in a custom-excavated cavern. Housed inside are two machine sets capable of moving up to 90 cubic meters of water per second between the Finstertal and Kühtai reservoirs, delivering 130 megawatts in turbine mode and 140 megawatts in pump mode. Apart from two discreet tunnel portals, the facility is completely hidden from view.

A 25-kilometer (15.5-mile) underground bypass system collects natural runoff across a 68-square-kilometer (26.2-square-mile) area in the rear Stubai, Sulz, and Winnebach valleys. TIWAG projects that this natural inflow alone will generate 260 million kilowatt-hours (260 GWh) of electricity annually.

For a resort that began ski operations in 1909 with hunting-lodge roots stretching back to Emperor Maximilian in the 15th century, embedding massive clean-energy infrastructure directly beneath a premier ski destination is a monumental shift in how alpine recreation coexists with the surrounding natural environment. With 47 to 50 kilometers of pistes and lifts topping out at 2,520 meters (8,268 feet), Kühtai is proving that high-alpine ski hubs can actively support regional power grids without altering their mountain landscape. Historically, winter sports destinations have faced growing scrutiny over their heavy environmental footprint, driven by energy-intensive snowmaking, high-voltage chairlifts, and heated resort infrastructure. Kühtai flips that narrative on its head by transitioning from a typical energy consumer into an essential, zero-emission grid stabilizer for the entire region.

For the broader ski industry, this project offers a groundbreaking blueprint for dual-use mountain land. As climate change continues to threaten winter snowpacks across Europe and North America, ski area operators are under immense pressure to justify their resource usage and adopt genuine sustainability models. The Kühtai 2 facility shows that utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure and world-class ski tourism don’t have to be mutually exclusive. By burying a 130-megawatt power plant 174 meters (571 feet) underground, regional energy provider TIWAG showed that alpine resorts can host heavy industrial solutions without carving up natural terrain, destroying high-altitude ecosystems, or sacrificing the pristine mountain vistas that draw winter travelers in the first place.
