Cosmin Lemnaru, regional director at Raleigh Manor Care Home, Exmouth, took on the Mürren Via Ferrata in the Swiss Alps on July 11 to support Barchester’s Charitable Foundation, which helps combat loneliness and isolation.
The foundation provides funding for individuals, community groups and small charities all across the country.
The 2.2km Mürren Via Ferrata route runs along the Mürrenfluh cliff face and reaches heights of 600 metres above the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Cosmin said: “I wanted to do something that took me completely out of my comfort zone and I think I can say I achieved that.
“There’s a point on that cliff where you’re just iron bars and air – you keep three points of contact, you don’t look down too long, and you trust the people who checked your kit.
“I knew all the staff, residents and relatives at Raleigh Manor plus my family and friends were behind me and their support plus the money I’m raising helped me go the distance.”
Clipped to a steel safety cable for the duration of the climb, he navigated rock ledges, vertical ladders and a suspension bridge while tackling his fear of heights.
The charity marks its 26th year of operation this year.
