A drought in Switzerland has dried out Lake Brenets, a popular lake on the Swiss-French border that usually attracts plenty of tourists every year.
The winding lake, which is otherwise known for its breathtaking beauty, has dried up this year due to the disastrous consequences of climate change.
Usually, the spot is packed with campers, swimmers, and canoeists in the summer, while boat companies are used to ferrying thousands of tourists across it during the summer months.
However, the popular Instagram spot looks more drab than ever as an ongoing drought in Switzerland has meant that water levels in the River Doubs, which feeds into the lake, have decreased in response to the scant rainfall.
As a result, dozens of boats are currently stranded on the cracked mud. One of these vehicles is ‘Jumbo’, the tourist vessel operated by Yvan Durig.
“These droughts are occurring in rapid succession, something we’ve never seen before,” Durig told The Independent.
He added, “It’s hitting us hard because we’re powerless in the face of this phenomenon.”
Unfortunately, fortune is yet to turn, with another heatwave in the region on the way. Below-normal rainfall is expected until at least mid-August, which means things are likely to get worse before they get better.
Any remaining water on site is brown and exists only in a central ribbon, which is still home to a dwindling amount of fish and a few swans. Additionally, a waterfall nearby has also dried up, according to local residents.
The unfortunate case of Lake Brenets is not the only example of the summer’s heatwave wreaking havoc on the earth; it has officially been declared that over half of England is in drought, leaving many rivers, lakes and ponds also dried up.
The conditions have developed quickly due to the low amount of rainfall and the high temperatures across the globe.
