GENEVA — Next week, the Finger Lakes region is set to experience a theatrical event that promises to be as thought-provoking as it is emotionally charged.
Theatre444, the acclaimed Geneva-based organization, is bringing the award-winning musical “Dogfight” to the Geneva Community Center’s Pat Collins Black Box Theatre for a limited run from Aug. 21-29.
Based on the 1991 cult favorite film, “Dogfight” features a score by the celebrated duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — the Tony and Academy Award-winning minds behind “Dear Evan Hansen,” “The Greatest Showman,” and “La La Land.”
The story transports audiences to San Francisco on Nov. 21, 1963, on the eve of the Vietnam War. It follows a group of young Marines during their final night of revelry before deployment, centered around a callous tradition known as a “dogfight.”
The narrative takes a profound turn when Private Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an idealistic waitress. Their encounter blossoms into an unexpected connection that challenges Eddie’s worldview, proving the transformative power of empathy.
Artistic Director Pam Rapoza describes the production as a balance of “high-octane rock melodies with tender, vulnerable moments,” noting that the story “asks us how we treat one another when no one is watching — a question as relevant today as it was in 1963.”
Theatre444 is renowned for creative staging that places the audience at the heart of the human experience. This production brings together a dynamic regional cast with chemistry and passion that Rapoza describes as “electric.” By staging works that serve as mirrors to our own lives, Theatre444 continues its tradition of sparking meaningful conversation within the community.
Advance planning is recommended, as seating is limited. Tickets are $5 cheaper when purchased in advance online compared to at the door. Buy tickets at https://cur8.com/projects/Theatre444.
Please note this production contains mature themes and explicit language. It also utilizes loud sound and intense lighting effects.
