James Harvey-Kelly photographed the Sunnmøre Alps in Norway for Sotheby’s Magazine

Pristine nature, maritime traditions, and dream locations – the article titled “Norway’s Sunnmøre Alps Are a Spectacular Year-Round Destination” by author Julie Coe highlighted the growing global interest in Western Norway as a luxury year-round destination.

James Harvey-Kelly photographed the Sunnmøre Alps in Norway for Sotheby’s Magazine (February 2026).

The article describes the region as the perfect retreat for a “coolcation.” More and more travelers are escaping the extreme heat of Southern Europe in the summer to enjoy the pleasant coolness, unspoiled nature, and deep fjords of Scandinavia.

In addition to the exterior of the famous Hotel Union Øye, the photo series also showcases the historic wooden summer cottages of the farmers (setters), grazing goats, and the majestic mountain peaks in the surrounding area. Since fjords crisscross the region, car ferries are a part of daily life. The track shows atmospheric shots of boarding a ferry as well as the view from a ferry window directly onto the passing backdrop of the Sunnmøre Alps.

Julie Coe writes about the hotel: “Most evenings at the Union Øye hotel, guests assemble in the living room to hear a staff member tell the tale of Linda, the resident ghost. The hotel, which is hidden deep at the end of the Norangsfjord, has stood in the shadow of Norway’s Sunnmøre Alps since 1891. Around the turn of the 20th century, it was a frequent summer destination for German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II. During one of these stays, a hotel maid named Linda fell in love with a soldier in the Kaiser’s service. The couple got engaged and promised to marry on the Kaiser’s return. But it wasn’t to be: the soldier died in the interim, and when Linda learned of his fate, she threw herself into the fjord.

The photo series further documents the moment of approach and the picturesque view during the descent towards the Art Nouveau coastal city of Ålesund. The region’s main airport is Ålesund Airport, Vigra (AES) – however, it is not located directly in Ålesund’s city center, but on the neighboring island of Vigra.

Incidentally, you don’t always have to take the ferry. Many islands are directly connected to the city and the mainland by modern underwater tunnels and bridges.
