Art and mountains: two exhibitions to visit in the Northeast Alps

Set against Dolomite landscapes and historic mountain villages, two exhibitions allow visitors to combine cultural visits with outdoor discovery: the Illegio exhibition cycle and the Tiziano program in Pieve di Cadore.

Illegio: a small village hosting major exhibitions

In this Carnia village, an ancient rectory has been converted into an exhibition space that each year welcomes works from major museums and private collections. The current theme is “The Dialogue”, and among the highlights is a work attributed to Caravaggio.

Access: visits are allowed only with a guided tour; booking is required.
Booking contacts: Tel. +39 0433 44445; email: [email protected]. Same-day bookings may be possible if availability allows.
Setting: the exhibition is staged in a canonical building surrounded by typical mountain meadows and scenic views.

Pieve di Cadore: Tiziano and Cadore landscapes

Pieve di Cadore highlights the local ties to the Renaissance master with the exhibition “Tiziano and the Landscape” at the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Cadore. Three paintings by Tiziano are presented alongside prints and works by artists such as Cranach, Dürer and Rembrandt. The House of Tiziano hosts an exhibition of Josiah Gilbert’s watercolours.

Main sites: Tiziano’s birthplace, the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità, the Archaeological Museum of Cadore, and the Church of Santa Maria Nascente.
Side events: lectures, concerts, workshops, guided tours and outdoor activities that enrich the cultural offering.
Route: follow the Vecellio itinerary to visit churches and parish churches across Cadore that house works by Tiziano and his workshop.

Practical tips

Plan travel time: Illegio is accessed via Tolmezzo; to reach Pieve di Cadore, the route via Ampezzo and Forni di Sopra is recommended (roughly 80 km).
Book guided tours for Illegio in advance, particularly on summer weekends and holidays.
Take advantage of related offers: themed menus at local restaurants, public art interventions and printed or social media materials that complement the exhibitions.

Visitor note: these exhibitions offer a chance to experience masterpieces and mountain landscapes together, providing a cultural itinerary that enhances the reading of the Dolomites through the lens of Italian art history.
