A new study finds Hannibal’s most energy-efficient route across the Alps and reveals why his war elephants handled the climb so well.

A new study has calculated how much energy Hannibal’s army used in hauling itself and its war elephants over the Alps in 218 BC. One route comes out far cheaper than the rest.

Of the passes he could have taken to cross the Alps, the Col de la Traversette would have cost his army the least energy.

That result adds hard biology to a question historians have argued over for centuries using ancient texts and Alpine geology. It also overturns a common assumption because the elephants, not the soldiers, were the part of the army best equipped to survive the mountains.

The cheapest crossing for Hannibal’s elephants

The work comes from Emilio Berti of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research in Leipzig.

Rather than debate which valley fits the old accounts, they built an energy landscape – a map of how much energy each step of a route demands from a moving body.

They fed the terrain into a model that estimates the cost of walking uphill and down for a given body mass, drawing on elevation data from NASA satellites. Then they ran it for a 3-ton elephant, a horse, and a foot soldier along four candidate passes.

The Traversette route won on every measure. Its nearest rival would have demanded about 11% more energy from the whole army, and the most grueling pass roughly 19% more.

Those margins held whether the researchers counted elephants, horses, or men.

Traversette required the least energy

Scholars long leaned toward a different pass, the Col du Clapier, as the likeliest path. Recent readings of the ancient sources and the terrain itself have swung toward the Traversette, and the energy figures now land on the same side.

Going uphill is the expensive part, and elephants normally avoid it.

An earlier study tracked wild African elephants by GPS and found they steer around even gentle slopes. The calculations suggest that for an animal that heavy, even a small hill is a real energy barrier.

The elephants, though, came off better than the other two. At the Traversette an elephant would have spent only about 4% of its fat reserves, while a horse lost roughly 11% and a man nearly a fifth of his.

Elephants burned less fat

The reason is that size works in reverse here. An elephant carries such a large fat store that 15 days of hard walking barely touch it, while a lean soldier has far less to give before the losses begin to bite.

Keeping that fat store replenished was the real challenge. In the wild a 3-ton elephant eats around 440 pounds (200 kilograms) of plants a day just to meet its basic needs. It takes many hours of steady feeding to consume this much food.

The demands of the climb would have added another five or six hours of eating each day. Such round-the-clock foraging would not have been allowed by any marching army. With that impossible, the elephants had to burn the fat they carried in.

Why did Hannibal bring elephants?

One puzzle has outlived all the others. People still ask not only how Hannibal crossed with elephants, but why he tried it at all, when the animals were so costly to keep alive.

The crossing has been argued over by historians, geographers, and classical scholars for generations. A recent analysis of that long quarrel calls it a debate that keeps sharpening rather than settling.

Experience alone gave Hannibal reason to expect it would work. He had already marched the elephants across Spain and southern France, so he knew they would handle the mountains better than his men.

Their anatomy helped too. A study of elephant legs found the limbs stay springy and flexible even at a walk, working more like a four-wheel-drive vehicle than stiff columns. That build suits slow, heavy work on steep ground better than it appears.

Hannibal’s own mount was an Asian elephant, named Surus, that was larger than the African animals from the Atlas Mountains that made up most of the herd. The name is one of the few individual details from the march to survive.

He may have counted on more than muscle as well. The sight of the animals could rattle Roman troops in the opening battles. It could also have inspired the Celtic groups of northern Italy, that were long hostile to Rome, into joining him.

Winter killed most elephants

Getting the elephants across turned out to be the easy part. The army entered the mountains with 37 of them, and around 30 were still alive to fight at the Battle of the Trebia, soon after the descent. Hannibal won this battle as the Romans panicked at the sight of the elephants.

All of those survivors except Surus died during the following winter in Italy. The crossing that had loomed as the great obstacle proved less deadly than the cold, hungry months after it.

That fits the study’s harsh arithmetic. Isolated in an enemy country with no supply line, Hannibal would have needed vast amounts of fodder and time to rebuild the fat his elephants had spent.

The authors suggest he may have stopped paying that price once the elephants had done their work. Feeding costly animals he could no longer use made little sense for an army already stretched to its limits.

New evidence settles old debate

What the study adds is a way to put real numbers on a march no one recorded in detail. The same energy-landscape method is used today to track how animals move across rough terrain and to plan wildlife corridors that avoid draining climbs.

Applied to a 2,200-year-old campaign, it settles on a clear answer. The cheapest way over the Alps was the Traversette.

The elephants were built to survive it, and the hardest fight for Hannibal’s herd began only once the mountains were behind them.
