Nearly 1,400 m (4,600 ft.) beneath the Brenner Pass, two tunneling crews digging from opposite sides of the Italian-Austrian border broke through the final rock wall—meeting with less than an inch of deviation. Completed at 10:35 a.m. local time on July 28, the breakthrough creates the core of a 64 km (40-mi.) underground train route that will soon become the longest railway connection of its kind on Earth.

But the dramatic meeting underground was not the end of it. Excavation is still moving north toward Innsbruck, railway systems remain to be installed, and the first trains are currently planned for 2032, so the milestone is best understood as a major engineering victory with a long construction checklist still attached.

Two sides meet underground

The final barrier in each tube was removed almost simultaneously, creating the first direct connection through the main running tunnels. Italian crews chewed through the rock ussing two massive tunnel-boring machines named Virginia and Flavia, while teams on the Austrian side used conventional drill-and-blast methods through their side of the mountain.

Even after digging from opposite countries, the alignments met with deviations of roughly an inch or less. That level of precision sounds abstract until you picture two crews working through miles of rock and arriving at virtually the same point, deep below one of Europe’s busiest Alpine crossings.

This July event should not be confused with the September 2025 ceremony attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker and EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas. That earlier event marked the cross-border breakthrough of the lower exploratory tunnel, while the 2026 work joined the two tubes that future trains will actually use.

A flatter route through the Alps

The Brenner Base Tunnel itself runs about 34 miles between the Innsbruck area and Fortezza. When linked with the existing Innsbruck bypass, it will form an underground railway connection of almost 40 miles, which project officials say will be the longest of its kind in the world.

The design uses two separate single-track tubes placed about 130 to 230 ft. apart, with escape passages roughly every 1,090 ft. A third, lower tunnel has been used to study the geology and will later serve drainage and maintenance needs, a hidden support line beneath the railway most travelers will never see.

Why go to all this trouble? The old line climbs steeply over the pass, forcing heavy freight trains to use extra locomotives, while more than 2.5 million trucks cross the corridor each year with the traffic, noise and exhaust fumes that come with them.

Faster trips and heavier freight

Planning estimates put passenger speeds at up to 155 mph and freight speeds near 99 mph on the new route. The trip between Innsbruck and Fortezza could fall from about 80 minutes to 25 minutes, turning a slow mountain crossing into something closer to a direct regional connection.

For freight companies, the flatter alignment matters as much as speed. Longer and heavier trains should be able to pass beneath the Alps with fewer locomotives, reducing operating friction and giving rail a better chance against the truck convoys that now dominate the corridor.

Cost of the breakthrough

Europe is paying heavily for that shortcut. BBT SE currently puts the project cost at about $12.1 billion using the European Central Bank reference rate published on Aug. 7, 2026, while EU support made available so far is worth roughly $2.65 billion at the same rate.

The current financing framework covers half of eligible project costs through the European Union, with Austria and Italy sharing the remainder. In practical terms, this is not only a tunnel but a long-term bet that moving freight from road to rail will deliver faster logistics, lower emissions and less pressure on Alpine highways.

The warning light is the schedule. European auditors found that the inflation-adjusted cost estimate was 40% above the original figure and that the expected opening had moved from 2016 to 2032, representing a 16-year delay.

The tunnel is not the whole project

The border connection may look like the finish line, but two Austrian boring machines named Wilma and Olga still have to continue north toward Innsbruck. Crews also must complete the lining, tracks, power, signaling, ventilation, smoke extraction and fire-protection systems before commercial service can begin.

Then come the approach routes. Austrian authorities say the northern access line is expected to be fully operational in 2039, while EU auditors have warned that unfinished connecting infrastructure could restrict the benefits of major cross-border projects even after their central tunnels open.

That is the project’s real test. A record-setting underground link can remove the mountain from the railway, but it cannot deliver its full capacity unless the tracks leading into it are ready too.

Road politics above the mountain

The Brenner corridor is also at the center of a legal fight over Austria’s truck restrictions. In July, an advocate general at the EU’s top court said Austrian night, winter and sector-specific driving bans breach EU law, while a traffic-dosing system that limits hourly truck flows on certain days could remain lawful.

The opinion is not the court’s final ruling, but it shows how tense the corridor has become. A reliable rail alternative could ease some of that pressure, although the new tunnel will not solve the dispute overnight.

What happens next

For now, the July breakthrough deserves attention for what it is, a rare moment when years of surveying, blasting and mechanical excavation met inside the same mountain. It also exposes the sizable gap between breaking through rock and opening a working railroad.

Passengers could eventually cross beneath the Alps in less time than many commuters spend in traffic, while freight operators could gain a flatter route through the heart of Europe.
