A Phaeton is an early open-air car built in the style of the old carriages. The name draws from Phaethon in Greek mythology. Phaethon was the mortal son of the sun god Helios. He drove his father’s sun chariot, lost control and nearly set the earth on fire before Zeus struck him down with a thunderbolt.
Of all the entries, 152 will be judged, Barrett said in an email.
Those include 18 Phaetons, including an 1890 Studebaker Phaeton and a 1906 Cadillac Phaeton, and 16 Audis, including one that currently holds the land speed record for four-door sedans, according to Barrett’s email.
