A 76-year-old hiker fell about 100 meters in the Berchtesgaden Alps and died. According to police, the man had been hiking with companions when he fell on the Rinnkendlsteig trail in Schönau am Königssee.
The mountain rescue team, which had been alerted, could only confirm that he had died. The 76-year-old was recovered by helicopter, as were his companions, who were subsequently assisted by a crisis intervention team. The investigation into the cause of the fall is ongoing.
The Rinnkendlsteig trail in the Berchtesgadener Land region leads from Königssee to the Kührointalm along the eastern side of the Kleiner Watzmann and offers sweeping views of Königssee. According to the Bergerlebnis Berchtesgaden website, the challenging ascent is recommended only for experienced mountaineers who are sure-footed, partly due to the risk of rockfall.
