It was a wild closing stretch in the classic rivalry match, which ultimately ended in a narrow victory for Basel. After FCB took the lead in the 85th minute, FC Zurich had several chances to equalize—but the Zurich team just couldn’t manage to tie the game at 2-2. Basel is thus celebrating its sixth straight victory in the classic rivalry. FCZ’s last win dates back to September 21, 2024.

And yet, the match had actually started perfectly for the Zurich team on Saturday evening. Eight minutes in, Philippe Kény confidently converted a penalty kick. Moments earlier, Miguel Reichmuth had been brought down in the penalty area by FCB defender Akpe Victory. As the first half progressed, FCZ impressed particularly on defense, while Basel remained too lackluster for much of the period.

Stephan Lichtsteiner’s team tied the game in the 62nd minute. Zan Celar set up Kazeem Olaigbe, who took a shot inside the penalty area and fired a powerful strike off the underside of the crossbar to make it 1-1.

The decisive goal, making it 2-1, didn’t come until the 85th minute. After Alexander Hack held Basel’s Victory back in the penalty area, the VAR intervened, and referee Anojen Kanagasingam awarded Basel a penalty. Celar confidently converted it to seal the final score. In stoppage time, several good chances by FCZ went unrewarded. A potential penalty for the Zurich team in the final minutes of the game was also overturned by the VAR.

FC Zurich will play its next match next Saturday on the road against Lausanne-Sport. Basel will face Young Boys on the road on the same day.
