ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office and surrounding community are mourning the loss of a deputy who served as a school resource officer Saturday.
In a social media post, Sheriff William Niemi confirmed the passing of Deputy Joe Cooper, who served as the Pymatuning School District resource officer.

Pymatuning Valley School District Superintendent Christopher Edison issued a statement on Facebook about Cooper’s death, saying that Cooper was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few days earlier.
“Joe was a wonderful man who loved his students and his community. Please pray for his family as they are in our hearts and prayers,” Sheriff Niemi said.
According to Geneva’s city hall Facebook account, Cooper also served in the Geneva Police Department and retired before his death.
With the Geneva department, Cooper was involved in general patrol duties, worked in the detective bureau and served as a school resource officer.
“Words alone cannot adequately express how deeply Joe’s presence, advice, and willingness to give his whole self to his chosen profession will be missed,” city hall said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family through this difficult time. Thank you, Joe!”

Superintendent Edison said that Cooper planned to return to the district to serve students after Christmas break.
It is with deep sadness that I inform our Laker Community that our School Resource Officer, Deputy Joe Cooper, passed away today. Only a few days ago, Deputy Cooper was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He fully intended to return to serve our students after Christmas break, but unfortunately, God had a different plan for him.
Deputy Cooper absolutely loved our community, and most importantly, our kids. In our final conversation, his only two concerns were his own family and his Laker family. He even proposed someone to protect our campus in his absence: Ralf Caswell, a lifelong friend and an exceptional SRO. Despite processing a life-altering diagnosis, Deputy Cooper arranged for me to meet with Ralf. When I told Joe that the district wanted to bring Ralf on board while he fought his battle, both Joe and his wife were elated to know our campus would be in good hands.
Even on the worst days of his life, Deputy Cooper did everything in his power to make sure WE were taken care of. I am deeply grateful for his friendship, guidance, and leadership during our time together. We will share details regarding his memorial service as soon as they are finalized.
