Former All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb has announced his retirement from the NFL after eight seasons. He revealed the news on Instagram (@nchubb27) Friday night.

Across his stellar career, Chubb played in 100 games with two different teams. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Cleveland Browns, the team that drafted him with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent last year with the Houston Texans, where he played in 15 games (his most in a season since 2022).

Chubb accrued 7,349 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns on 1,462 career attempts. He retires as the Cleveland Browns’ third-leading rusher in franchise history (6,843 yards).

“Football was a huge blessing in my life,” Chubb wrote in a statement. “It opened so many doors, gave me opportunities I never could have imagined, and allowed me to meet some amazing people. I’m grateful for everyone I crossed paths with along the way, and I promise I took something from each of you.

“Thank you to my teammates, my coaches, my fans, my family, my friends, and anyone who ever cheered me on. Twelve year old me could have never imagined where this game would take us. But 30 year old me can look back and say we gave it everything we had. Till the day that I die, it will always be: GO DAWGS. GO BROWNS!!! Batman out.”

Nick Chubb goes down in history as one of best running backs in Cleveland Browns history

Chubb’s best career season came in 2022, when he rushed for a career-high 1,525 yards (third-most in NFL) with 12 touchdowns. Upon his exit from Cleveland, he released an extremely heartfelt statement.

“[Seven] years. That’s more than just time — it’s where I grew roots, found a home, and felt a love like nowhere else,” Chubb wrote. “Cleveland, you didn’t just embrace me; you became family. To every fan who cheered, shouted, and believed — you gave me purpose.

“To this city, with its grit, heart, and unforgettable spirit: you showed me what true community feels like,” Chubb continued in his farewell post. “To my teammates, only we know how hard we fought every day and night. Relentless effort; scratching and clawing, doing all we could to win games, not only for us, but for the city. You guys kept me going every day and I will never forget my time with you in the building and on the field.

“I came here to play football, but I’m leaving with so much more — memories that’ll last a lifetime, friendships that changed me, and pride in calling this place home,” Chubb said. “This city deserves a winning season every year. It’s earned it. This city doesn’t quit. The people never stop believing. And my brothers in that locker room will never stop fighting. Cleveland’s time is now … and not because they are owed anything, but because RESILIENCE ALWAYS WINS. Just like we preached every day in meetings.

“This isn’t goodbye to what we built; it’s a thank you. For the trust, the passion, and the moments that made me feel like I belonged here from day one. Cleveland, you’ll always have a piece of my heart. Until we meet again.”
