HARTFORD, Ala. (WTVY) – A 3-year-old boy is hospitalized with serious injuries after being shot Sunday morning in what authorities are calling an apparent accident inside a Hartford home.
The shooting occurred while the child was in bed with his parents and a firearm placed under a pillow discharged, according to Geneva County Sheriff Tony Helms.
Helms credited the rapid response of a deputy and Hartford police officers, who immediately rushed to administer life-saving treatment to the wounded toddler.
First responders and 911 specialists coordinated closely to quickly transport the young boy to a specialized hospital in Birmingham for emergency care.
“The quick action of officers, 911 specialists, and others may have saved the child’s life,” Helms said.
Hartford police are leading the ongoing investigation into the incident. Helms added that his office has not received a recent update on the boy’s condition since his transport to Birmingham.
