GENEVA, N.Y. — An organization in Geneva held a back-to-school event to help children prepare for the upcoming school year.
The Back to School Banger took place at the FLX Unity Center in Geneva. News10NBC’s Garrett Chan was at the event and spoke with organizers about how it came together.
Organizers said it all started with a Facebook post. From there, various local organizations pitched in to help, including the NAACP Geneva chapter.
Some kids took home large bags and bins of school supplies and new or gently used clothes. Others even got haircuts.
“It’s convenience and making sure that one parents aren’t struggling to get the things that they need or for their kids, but also the confidence for kids to go to school feeling good. So, to look good, if your hair’s done, then you feel good,” said Allauna Overstreet-Gibson, director of the unity center.
She also told Garrett that the event and turnout helped them realize how they can improve next year. She said FLX Unity is working on several other projects.
FLX Unity moved into the building in December. The hope is that they can make this a mini community center, but for the event, the focus was making sure kids are ready to start the school year off right.
