Nestlé has announced plans to expand its pet food production in Thailand, investing more than CHF 157 million (€166.9 million).

The company noted that the expansion aims to meet growing local and international demand for pet food products under its Purina brands, including Felix, Friskies, Pro Plan and Purina One.

Remy Ejel, CEO of Nestlé Zone Asia, Oceania and Africa (AOA), said, “Pet food is one of Nestlé’s most dynamic segments globally, accounting for around 21% of Group sales. […]

“Thailand is an important part of Purina’s global manufacturing network, and this expansion will enhance our ability to serve more pet owners with superior nutrition.”

Focus On AOA

The investment will focus on Purina’s manufacturing site in Rayong, Thailand, supporting increased production using locally sourced raw materials, such as poultry, fish and vegetables.

The company emphasised that the site will support local suppliers and the local economy.

Nestlé also highlighted that the expansion builds on growth across the pet care sector, driven by a rise in pet ownership in Asia, Oceania and Africa.

Hubert Wieser, CEO of Nestlé Purina Petcare for Asia, Oceania and Africa, commented, “With over 350 million domestic cats and dogs across AOA as well as a pet population that continues to grow, demand for high-quality pet nutrition is also increasing.

“The health and wellbeing trend is being extended to pets, as they are increasingly seen as members of the family. This is driving demand for functional and specialized products that help enhance their longevity, vitality and overall quality of life.”

Worldwide Investments

Nestlé also noted that the investment is part of its wider investment strategy, including a CHF 520 million (€552.9 million) investment in a pet food production and logistics facility in Italy.

The company also invested $550 million (€473 million) in a new Purina facility in the US.

Following the expansion of the Rayong facility, Nestlé plans to further support its operations in Thailand by building a new production and distribution facility for Nescafé.
