NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – A New Bern habitual felon will spend more than nine years in prison after he pled guilty to drug charges from 2023.
District Attorney Matt Wareham sentenced D’Vonta Gibbs to between 9 years and 9 months and 12 years and 9 months, and gave a $50,000 fine.
Prosecutors say the 33-year-old was convicted on two counts of trafficking an opioid, possession with intent to sell or deliver fentanyl, and possession with intent to sell or deliver ANPP.
It was back in September 2023 that state Alcohol Law Enforcement agents surveilled 2012 Opal Street for drug activity.
New Bern police say they saw Gibbs drive away from the target location and pulled him over due to a suspended license.
Officers say they noticed an odor of pot from the car, and Gibbs, who was on probation and wearing an ankle monitor, admitted to carrying drugs.
They seized half an ounce of marijuana and .4 ounce of ANPP/fentanyl during a search.
Both the New Bern Police Department and the state Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency handled this case.
