Switzerland: The manufacturer has signed the relevant contract with the local operator MVR. The value of the deal, which provides for the supply of two Hem 4/4 locomotives, is not disclosed.

The new rolling stock is expected to enter service on the 800 mm gauge rack-and-pinion line from 2029. The route with a maximum gradient of 220‰ spans 10.3 km and connects the city of Montreux with the Rochers-de-Naye mountain of 2,000 m above sea level.

The four-axle locomotives with a length over couplers of 13.5 m will be used for the infrastructure maintenance. Designed to operate on 1.5 kV DC lines at a speed of 25 km/h, they will have 1.3 MW output at the wheel rim and a starting tractive effort of 220 kN. The hybrid propulsion system will ensure operation both under catenary and from diesel for passing non-electrified sections. Besides, special attention is placed on the ergonomics of the driver’s workplace.

The procurement is part of the Montreux–Rochers-de-Naye line’s modernisation project. Earlier, Stadler has also secured an order for eight three-car panoramic trains to serve this route. The rolling stock assembly under the two contracts will take place at the Bussnang plant, Switzerland. In addition, Stadler is equipping the line with its advanced NOVA Pro signalling system, while MVR is conducting renewal of the infrastructure, including catenary, power supply systems and switches.
